Does a 23 year old Sta-Rite System 3 need replacing?

Water has been crystal clear for several days now and CC is at 0.5, just haven’t had a chance to do the OCLT since it’s not my house and getting up at 5 am to drive over there isn’t appealing. :ROFLMAO:

Does a 23 year old Sta-Rite System 3 need replacing?

Yeah, I really just wanted to be able to supplement like you said so we're not adding so much LC - but good reminder to turn it back off when I'm ready for the OCLT.

Does a 23 year old Sta-Rite System 3 need replacing?

Today’s (er, yesterday’s) update, drains visible in the deep end. New salt cell installed and producing. Looked at the bottom of the prior salt cell at the build date and it was actually only 3 years old, so that’s a bummer. It was set to 100% output and on a timer of about 12 hours per day so I...

Does a 23 year old Sta-Rite System 3 need replacing?

Of course I did overshoot and got the CYA over 40 leading to a higher demand for chlorine, but still progressing well. Bottom of the shallow end is visible now. One thing I can’t quite make sense of, the pressure gauge atop the filter was frozen in time so I replaced with this Meanlin fluid...

Does a 23 year old Sta-Rite System 3 need replacing?

Alright, 8 lbs of CYA sourced and added, if it's 25-30K gallons that will get me somewhere between 30 and 40. The filter cartridges and IC40 were ordered from Polytec on Wednesday, not sure how quick they turn orders out but hopefully have them in a few days.

Does a 23 year old Sta-Rite System 3 need replacing?

Oh, glad you clarified, sure sounded like the suggestion was to add 10 gallons to the pool. :ROFLMAO: There are about 15 gallons still on hand so I shouldn't run out immediately, and stabilizer will be added today assuming I can find it; the shelf was bare at the closest store where I bought...

Does a 23 year old Sta-Rite System 3 need replacing?

CYA is still 0, I have not added anything to raise it. With CYA >= 20 SLAM level is just 10ppm, hence the addition of 3 gallons at the start. 10 gallons would increase FC to 40.

Does a 23 year old Sta-Rite System 3 need replacing?

Thanks. I'm very familiar with the process and is exactly what I'm doing, knowing it may take a little longer since it's not in my own backyard and thus I can't check/adjust as frequently as would be ideal.

Does a 23 year old Sta-Rite System 3 need replacing?

Well, I'm invested now. She really only lives about 10-15 minutes away and I work from home about half the time, so I'm taking over until I get this thing cleaned up and stable. Still trying to calculate the pool volume but I believe it to be somewhere in the 25-30,000 gallon range. I added 3...

Does a 23 year old Sta-Rite System 3 need replacing?

The good news is she didn’t balk at the price, she just wants to be sure she’s actually getting what she needs and not anything extra based on someone trying to take advantage of her. Which is what I’d classify as the guys telling her to throw the whole System 3 out, and the fact that not one of...

Does a 23 year old Sta-Rite System 3 need replacing?

Updates: 1. Test results: FC: 0.5 CC: 0 pH: 7.7 TA: 50 CH: 350 CYA: 0 Salt: (forgot to bring my salt test with me, will test later when I go back to add more chlorine) 2. She has algae: 3. As seen in the test results, there is no chlorine in the pool. I think her salt cell (IC40) is done...

Does a 23 year old Sta-Rite System 3 need replacing?

Yep, agreed re: algae vs filtration. I'll get eyes on the pool and do a water test today, take inventory of her equipment pad so I can hopefully verify the SWCG is working and probably bring some bottles of liquid chlorine along. With regard to this, what assessment would determine that the...

Does a 23 year old Sta-Rite System 3 need replacing?

I'm relaying a message from a family friend who I don't want to see taken advantage of, but without going into the pool service business as a side job I can't run over there multiple times a week to take things into my own hands either. Long story short her pool is 23 years old and she is...

    Can pump capacitors function intermittently?

I guess I am not discounting the possibility, but trying to wrap my mind around how if the motor was failing why it would fail to start one day and then start fine the next. Seems to indicate more a start/initialize problem than a motor problem, but I clearly don't know what I don't know. I've...

    Can pump capacitors function intermittently?

Dad and I installed a new Polaris PB4-60 pump at his equipment pad less than a year ago; in the past few weeks, he's had a couple instances of the pump failing to power on, only to come on just fine perhaps the next day or in one case not until three or four days later. I know the motor isn't...

Cooling fountain - risk of breaking a return off?

Solid idea. I have one umbrella in a stand that I’ve been positioning over the shallow end steps in the afternoon, but it’s a little light so I have to make sure to move it away when we’re not right there. The idea of a sail shade over part of the patio that would give some afternoon shade on...

Cooling fountain - risk of breaking a return off?

Well I only gave it a few days but I'm calling this one a bust for me. Sure, I noted a 5 degree temperature drop overnight but I get a similar drop overnight without them too. My real test was over the course of a few days where we hit 100 or so each day, at 5 p.m. my water temp was 94. I...

Cooling fountain - risk of breaking a return off?

Appreciate that feedback. We actually had a good rain late yesterday and the temps have been down in the lower 90s for a couple of days, so the pool was *only* 90 degrees at 11 p.m. last night when I installed one of the fountains. After running overnight, it was 88 this morning. Not sure if...

Cooling fountain - risk of breaking a return off?

Thanks for the link. Ultimately I waited a day too long on the one I linked previously, it's now showing it would take a week to be delivered from Amazon and our 5 day forecast has 3 more triple digits on it. The pool is up to 96 as of yesterday. I ordered 2 of these, should be here tomorrow...

Cooling fountain - risk of breaking a return off?

Very good I do know for sure they can be unscrewed, I’ve swapped out the return fittings once before. You make a good point about just taking it out before using the pool, though I did envision days of sitting on the sun shelf while the fountain rained over me. 😆 I went through the Home Depot...

Cooling fountain - risk of breaking a return off?

I'm probably not alone when I say it's Dang hot right now. Here in southern Alabama we've been in the upper 90s all week, with triple digits 3 days in the next 7 day forecast. My pool is 94 degrees. Now don't get me wrong, when the heat index is 110+ even 94 feels good but I could go for some...

My pump whines but only at night

Good to know Jim, thanks. A quick google search result showed those two numbers and that’s all I was going off of so far. I’ll contact my builder, assuming I can duplicate the noise on a cold day and have him come by.

My pump whines but only at night

Haven’t noticed it for a number of days but the whine is back again tonight and the temp is in the mid-40s. Seems the cold could be a factor, but still not clear what to do about it. Not about to start messing with it now, I guess when we get some cool days with daylight temps in the 40s I’ll...

My pump whines but only at night

Just about 1 year exactly from when it was first installed and turned on, so not old enough that I'd expect a failure. I'll have to pay closer attention to the weather when it happens. The unfortunate end is I can't duplicate it on a whim, like if I go out right now and set it to 2300 I bet it...

My pump whines but only at night

The basic gist of my pump schedule is 2 hours in the morning at 2300RPM, then 10 hours at 1400, followed by another 2 hours at 2300 before shutting off until the cycle starts again the next day. During the first 2 hours at 2300, no whining. 10 hours at 1400, no whine. But some days - not every...

Installing water bond in filter basket?

You never provided the link for this last option you referenced, which I suspect is the one that I have, but I would add a caveat that if it is installed in a pipe that is below the pool water level, then the pipe will have water in it and the water will be bonded. Suspect there are many who...

Pump Stops After An Hour Or So..........

I thought it was tested at both, but not sure if it was under load. I know nothing about those dials and such though, but I do see the 115 indicator your arrow is pointing to.

Pump Stops After An Hour Or So..........

Yeah, I'm definitely not an expert but earlier 120V was verified at the pump, but this photo of the label on the pump clearly says "Motor prewired 230 volt" - so could the 120 voltage at the pump be the problem?

Slow pressure increase when adding DE to sand filter

The mystery continues. As I mentioned before I started at 10, added DE until it got to 10.5 and stopped there. About 24 hours later it was at 12, sweet, logical. Now another 24 hours later it's back to 10.5 or even less. Same pump RPM the whole time. I'm not worried about it, just perplexed...

Slow pressure increase when adding DE to sand filter

Pool is not crazy dirty, and the filter is still new (6 or 7 months). Just completing my SLAM and trying to finish off collecting some finer bits I see primarily floating past the pool lights at night. I understand the point/effects of DE in a sand filter, just had not read of others who...
