Are you sure the white substance you're seeing is DE? If you have any doubts, put a couple drops of muriatic acid on it. If it fizzes it's calcium based.

A loss of 4.1 is possible but seems high. How did you get a FC result of 6.1 ppm and a CYA result of 48?

Can you confirm that you are swirling between drops? Most of us here would recommend a magnetic stirring device.

    Salt water pool over shocked

Take a look at this article. See if it's something you want to take on. You can rent a pump from Home Depot or purchase a submersible pump. https://www.troublefreepool.com/wiki/index.php?title=Draining

I Like My CSI, Should I worry about TA and CH?

Just curious, are you using softened water for top-offs?
  9. Rancho Cost-a-Lotta

    Salt water pool over shocked

I don't have this test kit, so I don't know where the "CYA" letters are. Is the sample level reaching the first (lowest) gradient line (which should be 100) before the dot disappears? If the dot disappears before it reaches this line, and you're using a diluted sample, your CYA is above 200 ppm...

This is a new one for me. I'm following. What type of chemicals have you used?

    Salt water pool over shocked

I missed that you had a SWG installed already. If your CYA is that high, just ask the pool guy to drain and refill to get your CYA into range.

    Salt water pool over shocked

Welcome! We're here to help but you'll have to take on some of the responsibility of caring for your pool. Your pool guy can't properly maintain your pool with weekly visits. He's using tablets to try to provide enough chlorine to get your pool through the week. Tablets are not a sustainable...

    Low Calcium

If your CSI is in the positive range you should be fine until CH level rises.
  15. Rancho Cost-a-Lotta

    Low Calcium

What is your current CSI? If you don't know, make sure that CSI tracking is enabled in the pool math app. If you can maintain CSI above -0.30 you should be okay I until CH levels begin to rise. What is the CH level of your fill water?

    700 CH with Flakes

If those numbers are accurate and consistently maintained, you should see no scaling in the cell. Your TA is a bit low. TFP recommends an acceptable minimum of 50 ppm. Your CYA is also lower than recommended for a SWG pool. https://www.troublefreepool.com/blog/what-are-my-ideal-pool-levels/ As...
  17. Rancho Cost-a-Lotta

    700 CH with Flakes

You need to update your test kit. I don't believe the results listed are accurate. The results show very low ph and TA. There's nothing in that chemistry that would indicate scaling other than high CH which is likely not accurate either.
  18. Rancho Cost-a-Lotta

    700 CH with Flakes

Flakes are usually produced within the SWG cell during chlorine production. High levels of CH and TA contribute to the scaling. Can you post a full set of test results.

How are you testing CYA levels?
  21. Rancho Cost-a-Lotta

Possible CYA @ 300-320 ppm. Need help.

Chlorine and bleach are basically the same. Locally, check out Walmart, Home Depot, or Lowe's, for 10% liquid chlorine or check independent pool stores for HASA 12.5% chlorine in refillable jugs. Stay away from laundry bleach as it can often contain unwanted additives.
  22. Rancho Cost-a-Lotta

Possible CYA @ 300-320 ppm. Need help.

The more you dilute the sample the less accurate it becomes anyways. You'll need to drain at least 90% of the volume.
  23. Rancho Cost-a-Lotta

Possible CYA @ 300-320 ppm. Need help.

Welcome. Your CYA makes maintaining your pool nearly impossible. Best to drain as much as you possibly can and refill. Any challenges there?

reducing calcium using a water softener

Your signature does not show that you have a heater. If things have changed, don't use the inline chlorinator if you have a heater. Use a floater instead. I'm curious to know how the water softener works out for you. Please post a follow-up. Because of some challenges here on my property, I use...

reducing calcium using a water softener

Evaporation leaves calcium behind so water exchange is required for reduction. If you have room in you CYA level, you can float a trichlor tablet or two while on vacation. Trichlor is acidic and will help to control pH rise. You can do some experiments ahead of time to prep for the vacation...

    Calcium on plaster

What do you mean by this? Can you post a full set of test results? This looks more like mottling than calcium scale to me.
  27. Rancho Cost-a-Lotta

reducing calcium using a water softener

What's the CH of your fillwater? What type of softener did you purchase? Your current CH is not yet to a point where it's unmanageable. With proper balance of TA and pH, you should be able to keep CSI in the negative range. Using the softener for top offs should effectively eliminate any...

Am I Using the FAS/DPD Correctly?

Try testing your tap water and see what happens. Sounds like you're doing everything right. Just make sure you're getting your water sample away from the returns and at an elbow's length below water.

    Chlorine tabs or not?!

You don't NEED to buy them if you don't have any. I thought you had some and were asking if they were okay to use. You will need to have a plan in place to maintain FC if your away from the house for days at a time.
