I use the Solar-Breeze skimmer. Like you anticipate, I found that the VS pump really did not keep up with the debris on the surface at low speeds. It is pricey, but it works very well for me - plus it's solar powered so your pump doesn't need to be running for it to work.

Living in a rural area I've found many different critters in the pool - alive and not. This was the strangest looking intruder I've had to fish out.

Everything I've read here suggests you keep your CYA at about 30 for the shocking process in order to save on the amount of chlorine needed. (At least the labor intensive beginning.)
