With clay you might be better off using a berm and swale to move the water where you want it. You would need to run the swale downhill from the pool - if you have a tiller it will speed things up and be easier on the back. Till the swale and use that loose dirt for the berm. Sew grass on it all...

That's just what I choose to do but if you prefer to run it just check that your pump cant run dry, etc (as mentioned by Mdragger88) and that everything else "works right" with the cover on and pump running. You could try covering it up and testing it out before the trip for piece of mind...
