    No suction

My pump was running fine when the pool guy opened it a couple of weeks ago. The pressure was a little high, so I was going to backwash it. Then it suddenly stopped sucking. I called the pool guy, he came by and fixed it. I don't know what he did. It ran fine for a few days, then it stopped...

    Pump Kaput

My pump died about a week ago 😢. It's a Hayward Superpump 1.5 HP. We moved into the house about fifteen years ago, so I guess it had a good run. I'm closing soon, so I'm putting it off to spring. Should I try to get it repaired? If I buy a new one, any suggestions with my pool?

    The Pool is Back!

Opened my pool a few days ago! Levels all look good. CYA dropped from 60 to 40 since November. I've been busy, so I let the chlorine drop to 1.5, I'll add some today. Bottom is dirty, back to work! What do people think about keeping one or two pucks in a floater? I check my CYA every week.

    Added nothing but chlorine

Finally closed the pool today. Went through the whole season adding nothing but chlorine. I started TFP last season, and I don't think I've ever had a season where I added nothing else. My PH basically stayed at 7.5-7.8. I started keeping one puck in a floater, and it drifted to 7.2, but came...

    Not closed yet

Anyone else in the northeast not closed yet? My pool is stubbornly clinging to 61 degrees. I'm starting to feel silly having it open. My opening and closing guy texted me a week ago.

    Close or No?

I just finished about 45 minutes of skimming. When I checked the pool, there was approximately one ton of leaves. The temperature is 65. Should I hold out? Seems like it's dropping about one degree a day or so.

    Heat Wave

In the middle of a heat wave in NYC, every day above 90. Can't touch any surface outside without getting burned. Poor dogs can't walk on the pavers. I wouldn't even try it without footwear. Even in the shade it's too hot. On the positive side, the pool is like bathwater. But I can't wait for it...

    COVID-19

I know a lot of people here are from sunbelt states that are being hit very hard right now. I'm in NYC, and we were ground zero of the whole world a little while ago. I personally know several people who died. A friend's husband, a client, my wife's cousin and uncle, a former teacher of my son...

    Daily testing and chlorine dosing

Like a lot of people here, I use the OTO for my daily test, and the FAS-DPD about once a week. The question is, what do you base the chlorine dosing on with the OTO? I've been using the middle value between 3-6 & 5-10. Or do most of you just add a certain amount of chlorine every day or two?

    Dead Opossum

I sadly found one floating under my solar cover when I reeled it off today. To make it worse, I later found a tiny baby opossum floating, too. 😢 I put a jug of chlorine in to bring it up to 20. Anything else I should do? Probably shouldn't swim for today, I guess.

    Vacation Water Chemistry

Moved from here. I'm also going away from July 2 to 7. These are my numbers: TC 10+ FC 1.5 CC 0.5 PH 7.8 TA 90 CH 50 CYA. 60 Salt 1930 Borates 50 Temp 88 The FC and CC were FAS-DPD on Sunday, when I hadn't been able to get chlorine for a few days. The 10+ is...

    Enhancing water feel

I've been trying to enhance my water. I got the borates up to 50. The PH is in the 7.5-7.6 range. I added salt, and it's up to 1930. My family has said that the water feels great. Is there an ideal salt level for feel? And is there anything else I can do to enhance the water?

    Portable heater

My pump is inside a wooden shed. I was thinking of putting a portable heater in the shed at the start of the season to heat the water. Would it have any effect, or would it be a waste of time?

How long do chemicals stay in the pool?

I was just wondering how long all the different chemicals we put in a pool stay there. Chlorine obviously starts disappearing almost as soon as it hits the water. And some, like salt, are said to stay there forever, except for splashout. Some, like CYA, degrade slowly. What about all the others...

    Will I die?

I've been neglecting my pool, so I knew the chlorine was low. I tested it with the TF-100, and it showed 1.0, with 0 CC. I also saw a little bit of algae on the bottom, so I decided to SLAM. According to Poolmath, a gallon and a half of 10% should have brought my pool to the goal, 17. About an...

    Closing and reopening

So when are people at about NYC latitudes planning on closing? And when are you planning on opening again?

    Until Closing

I know it's recommended here not to close until the temp drops below 60. Until then, do you recommend to maintain the pool the same as summer, as in running the pump, cleaning, testing, adding chemicals, etc.?

    Hayward chlorinator

I'm probably going to use trichlor for the rest of the season, supplemented by liquid, since my CYA is 40. I found out recently that my pump has a chlorinator. Is it better to use the chlorinator or the floater? I'd like to run my pump about four hours a day, as I've read here.

    TF-100 Chlorine Tests

The TF-100 comes with OTO and FAS-DPD tests. The instructions imply that the OTO is the everyday test. How do people use the two tests? I've been using the OTO daily, and the FAS-DPD once or twice weekly, or when I need more precision.

    First TF-100 Test

Finally got my kit Friday. These were the numbers. CL. 1.0 FC. 0.5 CC. 0.5 PH. 7.2 TA. 380 CH. 100 CYA. 20 The TA seemed crazy. I took it the next day, this time wipimg between each drop, and it was 260. I've been using liquid for a long time, but I switched to dichlor and...

    CYA / Trichlor Math

I'm trying to understand the math of CYA buildup. I've read that one 3 inch puck adds about 3.3 CYA per 10k. But I've also read recently that CYA degrades at about 5.0 per month. Where I am, we have about a three month season. So if I put in 2 pucks a week, it would add roughly 78 CYA to my 11k...
