Filter Pot won't fill up with water

When the PSV Valve is set to close the cleaner (to run the skimmer) when I turn on the pump the filter pot begins to fill with water then it recedes to empty. This continues indefinitely, so that I can't use the skimmer setting. When I set the PSV valve to close the skimmer (to run the suction...

    Calcium hardness keeps dropping

It turns out that the reagents for the LaMotte unit for CH testing were slightly out of date. So, I ordered new ones. After getting the new ones, CH increased to 417. Obviously, not low like the previous measurements using the outdated reagents. However, the Taylor test kit shows CH at 570. I...

    Calcium hardness keeps dropping

I'm estimating it is 8.5. It showed it was a little more than 8. Should I trust the Taylor result for PH more than the LaMotte?

    Calcium hardness keeps dropping

Thanks everyone. Well..... I purchased a Taylor complete kit for testing my pool. I have just taken the measurements using the Taylor kit and the LaMotte. The Chlorine, CYA, and TA are quite close to being the same. However, the PH and Calcium Hardness and WORLD'S APART! LaMotte shows 7.6 PH...

    Calcium hardness keeps dropping

I am using the LaMotte Digital ColorQ Pool 7 Plus. Using reagents like the Taylor but with a digital readout. And today it measures 182. By the way, my CSI is -.26

    Calcium hardness keeps dropping

I do not have an autofill. It seems to me that I am losing a normal amount of water through evaporation. I typically add water to the pool about every 5 days or so in these very hot and dry summer months. I add about 1.5 inches each time. This is what it has typically been for the past two...

    Calcium hardness keeps dropping

I have a 17,000 gallon plaster pool. The Chlorine level is 3.0 (I use trichlor pucks), PH is 7.6, TA is 65, CYA is 45. My problem is I can't keep my calcium level above 200. I keep adding calcium chloride to the pool. It raises the calcium level to about 205. Within 2 days I'm at 190, and it...

    PH Keeps Increasing

Thanks for the reply. I should add that there is virtually no use of my pool. No one uses it. There is no aeration of any kind. I do understand the concept you stated about liquid chlorine being a neutral form of it. But, if I add, say, 80 ounces of chlorine to raise my pool from 1 to 5, right...

    PH Keeps Increasing

So are you saying that a TA of 70 is too high, and it's causing the PH to rise? The TA has been around 70, sometimes 60 for over a year. It is only recently that I raised it to 90. That only lasted two weeks. It is now 70 again. At this normalized level of 70, the PH was rising .1 per day? Is...

    PH Keeps Increasing

As history, I had my pool re-plastered in December 2016. For the past year or so, my PH would increase consistently .1 every day. About a month or so ago I emptied half of my pool water to reduce the Calcium hardness to 325 and the CYA to 55. To try to keep the PH more stable, I increased the...

    pH keeps rising

Just curious. Why do you say that a TA of 80 -120 is waaay too high when the recommendations of this forum are 70 - 90+ for a concrete pool? Thanks

How Much Liquid Chlorine (10%) can I add to my Pool at One Time?

I'm going on a vacation. I plan to shock my pool to 11ppm from where it is now so that the CL will not drift too low while I'm gone. The Pool Calculator says I need to add 169 oz. to raise the CL level to 11. Can I do this all at one time, or do I need to do it over a couple of days? Thanks, Mike

Do I have to use a sump pump to partially drain my pool?

The plaster was re-done in December 2016. I think I've fixed the problem with my signature not showing. I'm going to try numerous small drainings to lower my CYA over time. Hopefully that will get me where I need to be. Thanks for the input.

Do I have to use a sump pump to partially drain my pool?

Thanks. I did put all my stats on my signature. However, it doesn't show up when I post. When I go to edit my signature, the information is there. Strange. I have a plaster pool that was resurfaced last December. It has 16,000 gallons.

Do I have to use a sump pump to partially drain my pool?

Thanks for the feedback. I need to empty about 40% of my pool. I sure there is no high water table under the shell. So I should not encounter any problems with the pool shell lifting or floating. Do you agree?

Do I have to use a sump pump to partially drain my pool?

I need to do a partial drain of my in-ground pool. I am not able to use my main drain for this purpose (main drain is not functioning), utilizing the waste valve setting on my filter. I can set my valve to either close the skimmer or close the suction side port that I attach my Hayward cleaner...

Is This an acceptable way to partially drain my pool?

I need to do a partial drain of my in-ground pool. I am not able to use my main drain for this purpose (main drain is not functioning) I can set my valve to either close the skimmer or close the suction side port that I attach my Hayward cleaner to. So either the skimmer is drawing water or the...

    PH keeps increasing

I appreciate your responses. Liquid chlorine has a PH of 12. So adding it does increase PH in the pool. TriChlor has a low PH so it does not increase PH in the pool. I have removed the TriChlor tabs and started using liquid chlorine. After using the liquid chlorine, my current results are: FC -...

    PH keeps increasing

I took a more recent measurement of my CYA and it is actually at 150~. I know that is very high. I've been using trichlor tabs and trichlor shock. Which, is obviously making my CYA too high. But the problem is that if I use regular liquid chlorine my PH will go through the roof, due to the high...

    PH keeps increasing

My 16K gallon pool's PH rises a little each day. I am constantly having to add muriatic acid several times each week to keep the PH at the proper level (7.4 - 7.6). However, this has caused my once very high TA to drop to 70. If I add baking soda it will raise the TA but my PH rises as well. My...

Persistent Problem with High Total Alkalinity

Since I've lowered the TA to a good level the PH is certainly better than it was (well over 8), but it doesn't seem to want to stay at 7.6. Keeps creeping up. My CYA is at 60. So it's in a good range, not too high. But unless I keep adding a little MA the PH rises. I do not have a water feature...

Persistent Problem with High Total Alkalinity

Why does the PH keep increasing in my pool? My water is in good balance right now. Total alkalinity is 100 but the PH keeps creeping up slowly. I get it down to 7.6 and if I do nothing for a few days it rises to 7.8 or 7.9. I'm using Tri-Chlor for chlorination, so the chlorine is not increasing...

Persistent Problem with High Total Alkalinity

I do not have an auto pool filler. I simply use a garden hose to fill the pool as necessary. I just tested the water coming out of my garden hose. The TA is around 170-180. The PH is 7.8

Persistent Problem with High Total Alkalinity

I am using a Taylor kit. This morning it took 22 drops for the green color to change to red. 22x10 = 220TA. It was coming down (slightly = 190) before I put the acid in last night without the pump running. Can I keep adding acid until the TA drops to around 120? If so, how much should I add and...

Persistent Problem with High Total Alkalinity

Recently retired, I have taken over the pool maintenance responsibilities from my former pool man. My pool was replastered about 5 months ago. It has 15,000 gallons and a 3/4 hp pump by Pentair. My pool is clear, and all chemicals are in the acceptable range except for the TA. My PH had been...
