Leaking 50 year old mosaic tile indoor pool - considering the options

Sorry for the delay, it's been busy. Updates: - We found a pool contractor that also does leak detection as well as tile repair. They used a tool that had an outdoor (ground?) lead, a floating sender unit of some sort, and a pole mounted receiver with headphones. - This identified multiple...

Leaking 50 year old mosaic tile indoor pool - considering the options

I'm getting (and reading) conflicting accounts of whether the tile and grout are just a cosmetic layer, or the waterproofing layer. It seems apparent to me that the areas of grout erosion are most likely due to water passing through the grout, and that the grout is a barrier, even if it isn't...

Leaking 50 year old mosaic tile indoor pool - considering the options

OK so more context. For general pictures, you can see my profile. I will grab pictures of areas of concern tomorrow. In 2015, before we purchased the house, the pool was re-grouted with epoxy grout, and it appears that the tile in the shallow end was completely replaced. We found out from...

Leaking 50 year old mosaic tile indoor pool - considering the options

Hey all, It's looking like finally time to address the water loss in our beautiful 20,000 gallon mosaic tile lined indoor pool. What used to be a small water loss has started to approach a few inches a day (clearly too much). This leads us to the following options: Option 1 - Try and identify...

Hard pipe? Straight inlet to pump?

Hi all, Our pool inlet piping seems to have been leaking, and ended up starving our pump and getting it good and hot, making the inlet and outlet connections particularly loose. The liberal use of hose clamps worries me - especially on the outlet side - but this is the way the plumbing was...

No problem at all! Everybody is so helpful, I'm never going to complain!

    Light Grouted In

Any word from lighting experts? From what I can see, 6 3/4 inch diameter is really not common... I may end up extracting the fixture, replacing the bulb with an LED and attempting a re-goop, hopefully giving a few years to research the next step.

    Light Grouted In

Might just try the string thing, or even attach it to a fish tape, remove and re-fish since it's not a long run to the junction box. Any idea if there is an issue with potential leakage through the cut end of the light cord, if I pull it right back through under water? However, like any good...

    Light Grouted In

Well, I'm back with good news and bad news. Turns out a very gentle twist of a flat screwdriver and the light came right out of the niche. Now the bad news - the cord is too short to be pulled above the water level. Since family is coming for Christmas (and you know we're going to want to...

    Light Grouted In

No need to apologize, peirek... I'm always up for some good fun. Good point on the colour difference, I didn't really notice that. Could well be that they used grout to "smooth" the transition between the ring and the tile. Bonks here we come!

    Light Grouted In

Back, with pictures! Album link: Pool Light - Album on Imgur The bigger issue for needing the underwater camera is the lighting, since it's dark by about 5 PM now, and the room lighting would just cause glare on the surface. Definitely been using TFP for almost 2 years, no issues there, and...

    Light Grouted In

So my light has finally packed it in, and I obviously want to replace it. Here's where the trouble comes in - it seems that somebody grouted the joint between the front ring of the light and the mosaic tile. The retaining screw comes out easily, but then the light won't come out of the niche...

    A Tingly Surprise and a tale of 2 x 120 V

That's pretty well what I figured. I will update when I confirm. It's kind of funny - on job sites, if I found something like this, I would have either fixed it myself or had a maintenance electrician fix it right away - but in my home, I take far more time to make decisions on the right course...

    A Tingly Surprise and a tale of 2 x 120 V

The old GFCI is a bit melted (this sets off my radar). The extra 120V is coming in on a black from the wrong breaker [Breaker 5]. More than just a tingle - measured 121V. When everything is connected and running, there is 240V measured across the pump - and the pump runs just fine. I haven't...

    A Tingly Surprise and a tale of 2 x 120 V

So, I went to fire up the pool pump yesterday (a daily occurrence, not on a timer) and the ground fault protection tripped and wouldn't reset. No problem - only two possible issues - one, a real fault (unlikely, this is indoors, fairly new, and a pretty clean situation overall) or the GFCI has...

    crazy mid century pool

Sounds like they did a whole lot of chasing their pH. We were left with about 1/3 of a bucket of dichlor. We were really wary about an indoor pool - my SO was a lifeguard, and any time she worked indoors she developed "lifeguard lung" (scary when you find out the cause - aerosolized bacteria -...

    crazy mid century pool

We had a smooth middle ground - they got the pool up and running the summer before in preparation for sale, took good care of it, and even gave us a "tour" of the pool equipment so that we knew which valves did what and where everything was - and it was crystal clear (but 64 degrees) the day we...

    crazy mid century pool

Whee! Another MCM house with a pool! Ours is a bit later, still has a lot of the touches. Would love to see pictures of the whole house. Comments on operating an older indoor pool (that was well maintained, and had gone unused for some time before being put back into shape before we bought the...

    leak and algae

Have you got a main drain? Could you plug the skimmer line with a winterizing plug and run the pump off of that? If not, could you use a vac plate and a short chunk of vacuum hose to give you an intake that remains under water when the level falls like that? You may have to fill up to the...

Resort Pool Turned Public Pool. Ew.

One thing you may want to arm yourself with is regulations for public pools in Canada / BC - you may find out that there are regulatory requirements that aren't being followed, and would require different operational practices. Way back in high school I worked at a hotel that had a pool and hot...

Unidentified Leak - When to take action?

Great point, will wait until that won't cause a skating rink outside and may try that. In the meantime, I'm predicting a lot of time with a mask on and some food colouring... which is actually surprisingly enjoyable.

Unidentified Leak - When to take action?

Absolutely! Pride, using the pool daily (when healthy), and impatience :) It was oddly saddening to look into the pool enclosure and see it below the skimmer. At 2 inches a week, it would be several weeks before we even hit the top of the light.

Unidentified Leak - When to take action?

We tend to use the pool daily... not in the last two weeks due to cold and flu season though, so we let it go down. I did let it go down without refilling for 2 weeks, and it went down a total of 3 to 4 inches. It was 1/2 below the skimmer when we decided to top it back up again (hoping to be...

Unidentified Leak - When to take action?

After increasing need of topping up our pool, we reached the point where we have to acknowledge we have a leak. This has been confirmed at 1/8 to 1/4 inch a day (evaporation is not a factor, solar cover is on and pool is indoors). When we were losing less than an inch a week, it wasn't too...
