    Black algae species

Are we sure that black algae is Cyanobacteria? It's strikes me as having characteristics more similar to Audouinella. Cyanobacteria should be able to be nuked easily by chlorine or (expensively, not practical of course) via antibiotics. Thoughts?

    General SWG questions

Answers would no doubt be in the many other posts but I'm not having much luck finding exactly what I want to know... Some questions... 1. The chlorinator output control knob - is this just a variable resistor? Cranking this to max lowers the resistance thus increasing the current through...

    Salinity meter imbalance

Hi, I have an Onga RP3000SC chlorinator. The chlorinator, due to it's self cleaning facility, reverses the polarity every 4 hours (on the hard water setting which I have it set to, 6 hourly on the soft water setting). The output meter reads 100% on the right hand side, but, when it flicks to...

    Storage of pool cleaner

I normally keep our Baracuda (Genie 3000) in the pool all the time. I'm thinking I might put it in the box where all my pool equipment is stored, and just put it in the pool when I use it. So, in the storage box, it would be out of the direct sun, but I would need to coil the hose a little to...

Saltwater chlorinator timer intermittently not providing power

Hi, My wife and I have an “Onga RP3000SC” as our saltwater cholorinator. It is currently set to run 8am – 10am and 2pm – 6pm. Yesterday I noticed that it was 9am and I could not here anything running. I went out and had a look at the chlorinator and the timer dial was correctly showing 9am...

    Some general Bicarbonate/CO2 related questions

Hi, I have some general questions (and more to come depending on the answers to my first "batch")... :-) A glass of pure water (pH 7), sitting on the kitchen bench, aerated. My understanding is that small amount of CO2 will dissolve in the water... CO2 + H20 = H2CO3 (Carbonic Acid). So the...

    Murky pool after rain

Hi. 40,000 litre pebblecrete concrete pool, sand filtered, swg, was nice and clean... Then it poured down rain washing dirt and clay silt into the pool. So a project over winter is for me to work on the drainage around the gardens and pool. I have added salt to the pool, have got the chlorine...

Baracuda Genie 3000 - how does it work?

Hi, I am a new pool owner (we moved house and the new house came with an already built pool). Included was a Baracuda Genie 3000 pool cleaner. It is an old pool cleaner, but it seems to be working fine. I have a few questions about it, and it's parts, and I'm hoping somebody can explain...

    Sealing around back of fountain

Hi Guys, We have a small rock waterfall beside our concrete pool. The waterfall works great, but I notice a bit of water dribbling back behind the waterfall and into the garden. This is coming from where the PVC pipe feeds into the rock. Is there something I can trowel/pump around where the...

    Total Alkalinity

Hi. Total Alkalinity - does this buffer just the addition of acid, or does it also buffer the addition of a base (I'm assuming not - that's "acidity" right?) I understand that if water has a non-zero total alkalinity, it's pH (and TA) will drop when acid is added. The pH drop will be less so...
