    Aquarite problem

I have an Aquarite 900 system that is about 5 years old, with a T-15 cell. The display is not showing salt level but shows E-3. I think it is an E but no top horizontal piece is showing. The check salt light is on as well. I tested the salt level and it is 3000ppm. Is this an electronics problem...

    GFIC breaker tripping

We have had a lot of afternoon thunderstorms this year. It seems that whenever there is a lightning strike fairly close (less than 2 seconds to thunder) the GFI breaker in the main panel trips. The breaker feeds a sub panel with individual breakers for pump, chlorine generator, light and...

Loose green algae settling on bottom

FC 8 CC 0 pH 7.2 CYA 40 I am getting a good bit of loose green algae on the bottom. I know my CYA is low and am working on that. The water is clear. Is this dead algae? If not how is it forming if the FC level is adequate?

    Grocery store chlorine question

How can you reliably tell if bleach is free of additives? Is it best to just use a store brand (Kroger)?

    Hayward SP2603VSP repair?

Has anyone replaced just the motor on this variable speed pump? Looking around the web it appears that motor is only sold with the electronic controller for $1100 for Hayward or about $600 for an AO Smith. I would just like to replace the motor and plug the existing controller into it.

    Dead algae?

This our 4th year with the pool. There seems to be a lot more dead algae on the bottom than in previous years. We have had a lot of rain which may be a factor. I have to run the robot almost every day to clean the bottom. The water is clear but not crystal clear. I have cleaned out the light...

    Hayward Aquarite 900 settings

This morning I turned the setting to super chlorinate for a few hours. When I turned it back to Auto, the display was showing centigrade instead of fahrenheit degrees and the salt setting was also a metric reading instead of ppm. The manual shows how to change from F to C but not the other way...

    Price of salt

Last season was paying $5.99 for a bag of Diamond Crystal salt. Went to get a bag today and it was $7.49, a 25% increase in just a few months!

    Question about algae

Algae is a photosynthetic organism. How can it exist in a light niche? Just wondering.

    Aquarite problem?

A green light indicates that it is generating, but scrolling through the diagnostics it is showing 31.9 volts and 0 amps. Also the instantaneous salt level indicates 0. The average reading is 2800

Bubbles in returns after dumping water

I have had to lower pool water level due to rain a few times lately, by pumping to waste. When I turn the filter valve back to circulate I get about 10-15 seconds of air bubbles from the returns. Does this indicate a possible leak in the return line or is it normal?

    ph testing with high Cl

I just became aware, from reading various posts, that pH testing is not valid if Cl is over 10. Is this mentioned anywhere in Pool School? Does it apply to electronic meter testing as well as titration?

    Pump anomoly?

I have 3 returns in the pool. On 2 of them I have installed Yippee Skippy type cooler fountains. I have noticed that in the morning when the pump starts, the output from the cooler pipes, as judged by the height of the spray is much reduced compared to what it is a few minutes later. Does the VS...

    Confused about CYA and chlorine

Here is a quote from the TFP Wiki ...Cyanuric acid, when dissolved in chlorinated pool water, forms various compounds with chlorine called chlorinated cyanurates. These are chemical compounds very similar to the original cyanuric acid where one of the hydrogen atoms has been replaced with...

    Possible black algae?

I have read that it is not as likely on a vinyl surface but I think this is black algae. I brush it off and it reappears in the same spots a couple of days later. Water remains clear. Is any algaecide recommended or just more chlorine and brushing? FC 7 CC 0 PH 7.6 CYA 60

    Changing from suction to return

When my pool was built, the builder plumbed three lines into one side of the pool. The two near the ends are returns. The center one was supposed to be for a pressure cleaner. I deleted the pressure cleaner and asked that the center line be tied into the pump suction to be used as a vacuum line...

    Effect of rain water?

This winter and early spring we have had a lot of rain, requiring me to pump down the pool on several occasions so the skimmer works. It does not seem like the salt and CYA levels drop very much even though I am pumping out 1 to 1 1/2 inches of water. Does the rain water sit on top of the...

    Inspecting Aqua Rite cell?

The inspect cell light came on yesterday so I consulted the manual which said to remove the cell and inspect the plates for debris or scale. Well, I removed the cell but cant see anything except the plastic grill on each end which I assume are to catch large debris. Even with a flashlight I...

Celebrating a year of clear water

Our pool was put into service last March. Since then we have enjoyed a year of clear water, even with heavy leaf drop in the fall and spring. I attribute this to frequent testing, following the TFP recommendations, having a SWCG system, and a robotic cleaner. The pool is open all year and I...

    Free standing screen enclosure?

It seems like most of the screen enclosures I see pictures of are attached to the house. Does anyone have a free standing screen enclosure? I assume it would cost more since it is not anchored by the house.

    PoolSkim?

Has anyone used a PoolSkim, that works off a return line and is supposed to capture floating debris? Does it work? Does the pump have to run at full speed?

    New Pressure Gauge

I bought a new pressure gauge from TFPTestKits. Thanks. It is so much better that the one that came with the filter it is not even close. I usually run my VS pump at 1750rpm. At that speed the pressure is only about 2lbs. Variations are much easier to read on the new gauge. Also the better build...

How to translate lbs. of Cl production

My Hayward generator can generate 1.47 pounds of chlorine per day. I assume this is 24 hours at 100%. How can this be translated to ppm at various % and run time? I thought I saw something on the app but now can't find it.

    Brushing pool sides?

It seems like pool brushes are made for the bottom, not the sides. Because of the angle of the brush attachment you have to hold the pole at an uncomfortable angle to brush the sides. Is there a brush with a 90 degree attachment to make brushing the side more efficient. I have seen the Wall...

Do cooling sprays decrease Cl delivery?

Since we are having a heat wave, a made a couple of pvc sprays for the returns, with valve to control the mix between spray and straight to pool. I am wondering if the spray causes chlorine to be lost to the air, reducing the effectiveness of the SWCG.

    Relying on son-in-law

Well, we are going on a 2 week trip in our travel trailer with 2 grandkids. I have shown my SIL how to test Cl levels and how to adjust the SWG output if necessary. I will reduce the Ph down before we leave. He will also check the skimmer. I am hoping we come back to a nice clean and clear...

Small patches of algae on liner

I have been keeping the FC level around 5-7 (CYA 70) and the water is clear. Water temp is now 84 and I am getting some small green patches on the liner, mostly in a corner or transition between the sides and bottom. Is that just a matter of brushing? I think I have been negligent in that...
