I'll link him thanks! --------------------------- You guys think I'm kidding, but I'm not. Actual screenshots from a conversation we had a few days ago! Context: he was asking how to vacuum to waste so I gave him the entire process, thus the "here goes nothing" comment to start. Pool...

Best testing kit to purchase? Total newbie

I will second this, and recommend that if you can swing the price, get it with the "XL" option and get the SpeedStir. The XL option has double the testing reagents than the normal-sized TF-100 for the FAS-DPD chlorine test, and the SpeedStir will really help you mix the chemicals during testing...

    Mouse in skimmer

It depends. I see you just had your pool installed recently -- did you SLAM it (following the procedure religiously?) when you first put in the water? Do you know your current CYA and FC levels? The short answer: in a properly maintained pool with a good CYA and FC levels, it shouldn't be a...

    Disgusting SWAMP!!

If you don't have time to deal with it, and it isn't your pool, I wouldn't mess with it until you do have time.

    Pool Still Green After Opening

Very nice! Regarding pump run time: personally I like to see how little run time I can get away with. Right now mine runs from midnight to 6am. I might try midnight to 5am soon, maybe even less. Unless you need to run it in tandem with a heater, there's no reason to run it other than to mix...

I'lll keep sending my buddy pictures like this until he quits going to the pool store

He just moved to a house with a pool and he's pretty excited about it, but despite his best efforts and a ton of chemicals from the pool store, it is still cloudy and green (even after I've linked him here). Yeah there's more important things going on in his life right now, but I do enjoy...

    Bleach vs Police! :)

You might find this video enlightening. The police are not your friends, so don't talk to them any more than is legally necessary, no matter how nice and friendly they are. They are there to develop a case for the DA. I may or may not be married to an attorney.

Ugh Found a dead rat in my strainer...

I've decided my pool needs a billboard with small animal drawings on it that gets updated every thing something dies in my pool, similar to fighter planes having a 'kill count' of splashed enemy planes painted on their sides. Maybe it would make the critters think twice? A few weeks ago I had...

I totally understand -- this annoying thing called "real life" sometimes has to take priority. :-x

New house, new pool, and an uphill battle

The FC will drop VERY quickly when you're trying to clean up a swamp. Honestly I would recommend that you do a SLAM when you can babysit the pool pretty often, preferably overnight. It will go much faster if you keep the FC levels at shock level constantly. This means checking the chlorine...

Recommend me a high-quality pole and net

While I was cleaning some gunk out of my pool last night after a week-long vacation, my net decided to break, so I'm in need of a new one. The pole I have (both the pole and net were the previous owners' that I inherited) seems cheaply made and doesn't like to stay extended. I also had a...

    Overwhelmed!

If you are really a mom to twins, you'll quickly find that keeping a pool crystal clear is much less stressful and time-consuming than chasing two toddlers running in different directions. I know this because it's my everyday life! In fact, a bit of time away from the munchkins in the evening...

New house, First time pool owner...

If you're a chemist who works in water quality, this should be easy for you! All of the chemical tests we use are just simple titrations. Read up on the SLAM routine here on TFP. The most important conceptual part is this: you have to kill the algae faster than it reproduces. If you...

New house, new pool, and an uphill battle

Any particular reason for buying more sand? Unless the sand filter is totally empty, you should be able to backwash it to clean it. If that doesn't work, you can deep clean your sand filter -- that might be easier than replacing all the sand. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress...

Green after a month of work

You're letting your FC fall too low. Test more often and dump in more bleach the instant it starts to fall below SLAM level.

Green after a month of work

Read up on the SLAM routine and follow it religiously. You will likely need lots of bleach (and it doesn't necessarily have to be "pool chlorine" -- plain, regular, unscented laundry bleach works great), and Wal-Mart has it for $1.77 for a gallon of regular 6% laundry bleach. Here is my first...

The earthworms really liked our pool over the winter

Ok, you got an actual "LOL" out of me for that one. We recently purchased a robotic vacuum for our house, that we've named "Dobby". He loves eating dirt. He's really good at it. So good at it that I'm considering a pool version so I won't have to keep manually vacuuming.
