Disgusting SWAMP!!

I started the opening of my parents pool that is just GROSS!!!! I know how to do the SLAM, but the house is vacant right now because my parents are still in NJ as the house needs a full reno, so it is a P.I.T.A to run over there every 5-10 mins. I can't run the filter because there is so much gunk in the pool that the skimmer basket needs to be dumped every 5-10 mins (even after skimming the top). I scooped out the 4 live frogs and one dead one then put in 4 bags of shock yesterday, turned on the filter and went to my sons baseball game, when I came back the filter was running but there was so much crud in the basket that the pressure was barely there, so I back washed and turned it back on, then kept emptying the basket while my husband skimmed the top. We did this for 30 mins @ 8pm last night and just gave up, shut the filter off and came home.

They have a 28' round vinyl above ground pool and the same filter and pump as in my signature. I don't know where to go from here as I don't have the time to run there as often as needed.

It sounds like that beast needs the bottom scooped up of all the matted stuff that's probably down there before you even start if you can't see the bottom. If you don't have the time, I'd consider a 50% drain and fill at least to speed things.

May I ask why you are wanting to open the pool if they are not there and the house is vacant? Are they selling? If you really want to open it, you should dedicate at the minimum of 24-48 hours with the pool scooping and skimming the pool to get it ready for a SLAM. This doesn't include the amount of time you should be there actually dosing the pool and testing the water.

I agree...it would be a waste of money and effort to do anything with the pool until such time that it needs to be either presentable or usable. It might make sense in this case to wait until you can empty it via partial draining/filling, clean it good, and start with fresher water. Then SLAM.

They want to open it for two reasons...
1. Mosquitos (don't need neighbors to hate them before they move in)
2. Contractor is a friend and will be coming down the end of June and will be staying at house for possibly 2 months.

Can you devote the weekend to staying there and clearing the muck, etc.? Getting all that junk out is job one.

possibly.

I have the filter running now, I think my husband and I made the mistake of brushing the bottom after adding the shock and it stirred all the crud up and obviously clogged the skimmer basket. I'm hoping the water lightens up so I can see all the gunk on the bottom, I'm just not sure how to get all that junk up. I don't think the previous owner left everything we need to vacuum it, (not even sure if I can or should vacuum it) . We never had this problem with our pool, so this swamp thing is all new to me.

The previous owners of my parents house used pool chemicals which I am convinced is why the pool turned green in the first place. I am a true TFP believer!!! We don't cover ours or put bleach in it after Nov. and it stays clear all winter. We even had a neighbor from somewhere in the neighborhood comment that we are the pool Goo-ru's because how clean our pool is and they can't get theirs to keep from turning green in the winter. (This neighbor must have a drone, none of my immediate neighbors have pools.) Creepy haha

You don’t even need to see the bottom to get the leaf rake (net) out and start scooping!

Yikes! Don’t do anything outside that you don’t want on YouTube!

Keep us posted! And we like swamp pics, too!
We'll we went over there to scoop the bottom and low and behold there wasn't really anything there. I am assuming the pressure gauge goes up and the flow slows down due to all the sludgey dead algea needing to be back washed out of the filter. So I guess it's not as bad as I thought!! I guess I'll be slamming this weekend! Ughhh

If you show 0 CYA I would suggest doing an ammonia protocol before adding any CYA.

Take care.

Haven't even took out the test kit yet. Just threw in some shock to lighten the deep green (photo in comments is approx 20hrs after shock) still not enough, but I will test and if cya is 0 I will look into whatever the ammonia protocol is. Thank you

Once you get it swimmable, maybe school the contractor friend on basic maintenance. Empty skimmer baskets, backwashing, have him add a set amount of bleach every day or every other day, etc.

Oh yeah, ya better believe it. I will definitely be giving him a quick lesson on maintaining it. I'm gonna be taking a lot of my time to get it ready for him, he is darn sure going to take care of it while he is here. :p

Ok! was going to start the SLAM process took readings ...

Chlorine : 0
Calcium: 50
TA: 30
CYA: 0
PH: 6.8

Totally clueless where to start. HELP
