New Pool Owner - May need help

Retested CYA at 40. Probably didn't wait long enough after the addition for it to show on test last time. FC is still dropping. Topping that up to 16 ppm 3-4 times per day as time allows. Only dropping down to 13-14 ppm range between adds. CC is pretty steady at 1.5

You're doing exactly right :)

If you wanted, you can hold off on the extra CC part of the test (until the water clears more and your FC starts holding higher/longer) it'll save a little reagent, keep testing FC and bumping to 16+ as often as you can =) PoolMath

I don't test CC every time, but checked 2 days ago and again today. I realize I don't NEED to, but again, that analyst instinct gets me every time. Thanks for making sure I knew though.

Then that was perfect, you really can test for CC just once a day (in the morning, if you "really" need to know & for records sake) =)

But for intents and purposes of the SLAM Process, keeping FC up @ CYA/shock value is the #1 goal! (until it starts holding, of course)

Still trying to keep FC levels up as much as I can. Working 12 hr night shifts makes it a little difficult sometimes. I have trained the wife on FC testing and loaded the pool math app on her phone so she can calculate/log additions, so hopefully that will help speed things up a bit.

Saw a good amount of improvement yesterday, but not much of a change today. Here's pics of the vacuum head from the last 2 days.

It takes longer if you can only bump FC a couple of times a day, rather than every couple of hours, but you ARE making progress!

Ok, after seeing the pics side by side I now can tell today's improvement was better than I thought.

Exactly!

Just got a new pressure gauge for my pump/filter. Old one would only go to 25 with the pump off and 26 normal running pressure with severely diminished flow requiring backwash at 27. The new one is only reading 3 psi with the pump on. I'm just guessing this should be higher. Is it possible/probable that my impeller is shot?

It is quite possible your filter pressure could be 3. You have a clean sand filter, no heater.

Do you have good water returns to the pool?

The pool is continuing to clear. I can just see the bottom in the deep end now.

I retested CYA today and got a reading of less than 20. Had raised it to 40 a couple days ago. Suspect that I'm fighting ammonia, as my sand in the filter has a slight ammonia odor. What is the recommended course of action for this? I was planning on changing the sand out tomorrow. Should I hold off on that until I can get the ammonia knocked out? How should I proceed with the SLAM from here? Raise CYA and maintain FC to match?

Based on the filling logs, ammonia isn't making sense to me either. Unless I had some and now it's gone. I noticed the odor in the sand a couple days ago when I was checking the condition of the sand. Guess I will raise CYA again and continue with the slam.

I must be doing something wrong, but can't figure out what it is. Just used the 50 ppm CYA standard to verify my test technique. The dot doesn't disappear until I hit the 20 ppm mark.

I took a sample to the pool store (I know, I know) just to get a confirmatory reading before adding more stabilizer. Their test showed I'm at 56 ppm CYA.

I'm filling the test bottle with pool water/50 ppm standard to the lower mark, then adding the R-13 to the upper mark. I then shake it for 30 seconds, let sit for 30 seconds, then shake again and start filling the view tube.

It doesn't matter if I use pool water or the 50 ppm standard, he dot doesn't disappear until the 20 ppm mark. What am I doing wrong? I just bought the TF-100 within the last 2 weeks. Is it possible that I have a bad bottle of R-13?

I just figured out your user name! LOL

When you do the CYA test, as Splash said, do it outside, full sun, sun behind you. Fill cylinder to first line, QUICK glance. If dot still visible, fill to second line, another QUICK glance. Repeat as needed. If you look at it long enough, you will see the dot, so you only want to do quick glances.

User name goes back about 15 years from my old poker group. I'm proud to say that I earned that nickname and I use it for every login that I can.

I don't know what I was doing wrong, but just did another test and got a reading of 40 ppm. Only thing I did differently was shake the R-13 before adding it to the test sample.
