    Planning for RO treatment

Follow up: Had the RO process done on my pool yesterday. Nick arrived with his trailer about 10:15 AM and was packed up and gone by 4:15 PM. The actual time spent running the machine on my small pool was about 3 1/2 hours. The before and after number numbers (before any re-balancing)...

2nd backup pump in parallel with 1st. Do I need a 3 port on both inlet and outlet?

I would be very cautious about using automated 3-port valves in this application, if either valve fails to move when you select the backup pump the pump could be "dead headed" and bad things occur (burst pipes, burned out pump). I would suggest adding 2 check valves. One in series with the...

How to fix the electrical connector thingy to the pool pump?

If it can be pushed in and just falls out I would guess that the threads are damaged/stripped on either the pump or the fitting. Looking closely at your picture it looks like the threads on the fitting are either badly mashed up, or someone has tried to use some sort of glue to hole it in...

    Auto cover box access

You say "Lids" are there trays or some sort of structure that are holding multiple coping and paving pieces? I ask because my cover is similar but the the lids are just ~24x24" concrete coping sections that need to be lifted off one at a time. It is a two person job but not unmanageable.

Painted IG Gunite Pool. No Plaster, tile, or coping. For better or worse, the renovation has begun...

Do you think the pool has always been this far out of level, or has it settled over the years? Just to throw out crazy ideas, nothing says you have to level the coping and deck. It might drive the tile-setter mad, but start will a full course of waterline tile that has it's top maybe 1-1/2 -...

    Aquapure cycle time. Wiki correction.

A couple of other observations: The timing for the first on period after the unit is power up seems to be from power on, and not from when the cell senses water flow and actually turns on, which in the case of my system is about 2 minutes later. (That is the first cycle of the day is shorted...

    Aquapure cycle time. Wiki correction.

Greetings: I'm hoping this is the correct forum to post this: I have a correction (or possibly addition) to the Jandy Aquapure wiki page: Aquapure cycle time The wiki states that the Aquapure has a 3 hour cycle time -- 50% is 1.5 hour on, 1.5 hours off. Being suspicious that this was a...

    Planning for RO treatment

Good point, but our pool has a giant mixer -- the Riverflow swim current generator. Run it for 10-15 minutes and I can pretty much guarantee that the main part of the pool is 100% mixed. On the other hand I do have this aging jug of liquid chlorine that I might as well use up and leave...

    Planning for RO treatment

I do have baking soda on hand. I've got a 5 lb box that I've had for ages which should be more than enough to get the TA back to 50 from the expected 33 or so. It occurs to me that I could also skip the periodic acid addition in the days before the treatment and let the pH rise to 8.2 or...

    Planning for RO treatment

I have our local reverse-osmosis provider scheduled for later this month. My goal with the process is to get the CH number down from it's current ~725 number to somewhere in the 250-300 range. With that plus adding borates I hope that I can allow the pH to stabilize in the 7.8-8.0 range and...

New Build, CA 95023 - From Dreaming to Pool.

Wow that is a lot of valves... If you plan in install the valves horizontally (as the sweeps in the picture would indicate) then you are going to need some sort of support structure to hold them up, perhaps a uni-strut frame fastened to the pad. If you instead install the valves vertically...

    Wall anchor screws getting Rusted

Those look like the standard "drop in" style anchors. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Red-Head-1-5-8-in-x-3-8-in-Drop-In-Anchors/3006409 Those work well in solid concrete but not so sure about cinder block. In any case to be effective they would need to be flush with the block surface, not with the...

    Jandy Valve Question

If you tighten the screw enough it will (or should) lock the valve down and prevent it from turning. I assume this is a "feature" to prevent carefully set valves from being accidentally moved. Best to leave the screw about 1/2 turn loose and the valve will move freely.

Has anyone seriously considered using Shade balls as an alternative....

I have occasionally thought about adding a layer of 1" foam insulation panels on top of my auto cover to provide additional insulation when needed. My pool is small -- 9'x23' so 6 4x8 panels (one cut down to 3' wide) would cover it pretty easily. With just the cover the pool is reliably about...

Has anyone seriously considered using Shade balls as an alternative....

Ok I'll bite... Highest density (100 %) will be a single sphere 1M in diameter (exactly filling your gumball machine) Lowest density will be epsilon larger the 1/2M (ie the smallest sphere that will still not fit two in the machine.

    Replacement Antenna for iAquaLink 2.0

That antenna connector is pretty standard for WiFi devices, and yes it just screws on. If you have an old WiFi router laying around with an external antenna the odds are quite good that you can pull the antenna from the router it would work on your Aqualink.

    Pool safety

In terms of safety the best addition would be an auto cover and to keep it closed whenever the pool is not in use. That would require modifying your design a bit so that the water surface is a simple rectangle. If you do add an autocover, you will be likely still be required to fence the...

    Would you repurchase your dolphin?

I second the recommendation to add a dedicated suction port regardless of the type of cleaner you settle on. The incremental cost should be very near zero, just a pipe and a valve as Matt describes, and when you do need to manually vacuum it is much quicker and easier to connect the hose to...

    Moving from PoolCo to DIY

I agree that the 45,000 gallon number sounds high, that would imply an average depth o 6.5' for the 08' x 46' pool (But certainly possible if it has a very deep deep end). Where in NorCal are you? Reverse Osmosis may be an option for getting the CYA back under control without using as much...

    Fusion Inground Nature2- High FC&CYA

Regarding converting to an SWG with your Fastlane Pro you should probably contact Endless Pools. I found this on their web site: Can the Fastlane be used with a salt system? Yes, if the pool and Fastlane Swim Unit are both properly bonded and you maintain proper water chemistry. We do make...

    Fusion Inground Nature2- High FC&CYA

If you wanted to go to a SWG with no plumbing changes you can swap your Fusion for the "Fusion Soft" which is basically the same unit with the SWG in place of the Tri-clor dispenser. We do not however recommend using the "mineral cartridge" that comes with these units as those add metals to...

Need advice: Fix Coping Over Skimmer

Amazing that it lasted as long as it did. That was a failure just waiting to happen. I assume by "double" piece you are thinking you can get a piece of coping long enough to replace both the loose piece and the piece that is spalling above it in the picture. That would work better than just...

Having a hard time with Calcium Hardness test on Taylor K-2006

The other thing I have seen is that sometimes the drops of R-0012 are smaller than they should be which will cause a high reading. There is a specific caution about this in the TA instructions, but I have found it can happen with any of the drop tests. What I do is press the tip of the...

Having a hard time with Calcium Hardness test on Taylor K-2006

I've also had similar issues with the CH test. The procedure I now use is a variation on mknauss's suggestion: Fill the sample vial to the 10 ml line with pool water, then add 15 ml of distilled water (bringing the level to the 25 ml line). Now follow the directions for the 25 ml version of...

Lowering water level with cartridge filter

Indeed that is a cartridge filter, nothing to backflush. If you haven't yet I would recommend opening it up and cleaning the cartridges (and gauge their condition).

Lowering water level with cartridge filter

Yes assuming that pipe goes somewhere safe to dump the water that valve will do what you want. I would recommend that you just crack it open (turn it clockwise a bit) with the pump running and gauge the resulting flow and increase as desired. You will get the maximum flow when the handle...

    Jets on sidewall above waterline

Indeed. I would take the top off the valve, rotate 180 and put it back so the stop does what it is intended -- prevent the valve from moving to the position that blocks the pump flow.

Help! It rained a ton last night.....

I would dump in some chlorine but otherwise let it settle for a day and then vacuum to waste. That will get the majority of the dirt our without messing with your filter.

    Jets on sidewall above waterline

If you loosen the wingnut on top of the handle enough you will be able to lift the handle clear of the stops. Once you have it past the stop you can re-tighten the nut to the normal (still a bit loose) setting and the handle should swing freely through 180 degrees. But be aware with the top...
