IC40 Wire Fire

Came out to do some maintenance today and noticed my EasyTouch panel covered in black soot. Upon closer inspection, it seems the wiring from the panel to the IC40 had caught fire/melted. I was able to find one other thread on this forum where the same thing occurred. In talks with Pentair support at the moment. Hoping that they will make it right.

Meanwhile, I removed the melted internal wiring that connects the IC40 to the SCG circuit board. Now, it seems my pump won't run without that connection. As I would like to still circulate my pool while adding chlorine manually meanwhile, is there a way I can still get my pump to run? Thanks in advance!

Move the Pump's RS-485 communication connection from the SWG board to the main circuit board.

You can disconnect the pump from the Automation if you want and control the pump from the pump's control panel.

Remove the surge board and check the bridge rectifier.

This worked - thanks! At least now I can manually chlorinate and still circulate while awaiting Pentair or my own replacements.

You probably need a new surge card and then you can wire the power directly to the wires.

Is it under warranty?

It looks like everything is about 5 years old, so no warranty.

You can get a new female end for when you replace the cell, but for now, just wire the cell directly to the wires rather than try to replace the male end.

Use a cable gland to hold the cell cord in place.

It seems we should be considering what caused the heat/fire/melting to begin with. If I reconnect the IC40, won't it possibly happen again? Or are you saying that the "surge card" may have been the problem?

Maybe just a bad connection.

Corrosion causes heat and probably caused it to burn up.

I am not sure what else you can do except replace the card and see what happens.

Maybe put a 10 amp fuse in the line to prevant excessive current as a safety measure.

Pull the surge card and look for any damage.

Check the output voltage.

Check the low voltage circuit breakers.

Maybe wire directly with the current card and see if it works.

What do you think/expect/hope they will do for you?

At 5 years, they will probably just tell you to buy a new cell, power cord and maybe a new surge card if necessary.
Turns out, nothing. They won't do anything. At the very least, I thought they may want to determine what would cause their product to nearly burn a customer's house down. Apparently not.

Pentair is a good company, but most call centers seem to work like this these days.

Pentair was a better company when they were smaller and pools was their primary business.

Now Pentair is a multi-billion dollar public company with pools being about 1/3 of their revenue.
