Hayward Sand Filter Repair/Rebuild

I'm in the middle of putting my Hayward S244 Sand filter back together, and the last piece I'm struggling with is how to put the drain screen in. It doesn't fit snug on the inside, so maybe it just needs to be glued/caulked into it? I see the newer filters have a screw-in style screen, but mine is older (pre-2005). Thanks for any insight!

No sand in it currently. Rebuilding it in my garage with new lateral assembly, elbow, etc before bringing it back out to the pad. My concern with pushing it in from the outside is the sides of the hole are smooth, but it has a nub towards the end of the screen. Not sure how it'll seal if it sticks out some? I'm guessing I'm way overthinking this.

Tap it into place until the cap and washer can fit is what I would try. We don't drain/winterize filters here so haven't had a lot of experience. How was it removed?

Ya, definitely no option but to drain around here.

I tapped it into place with a rubber mallet and it seems like it'll do the job. When we did some landsacping work, I had to move the filter so emptied the sand. I found the piece just laying at the bottom of the filter not attached in any way (along with an old pressure gauge which was a bit odd...). Anyway, the pool is from 1999-ish and we bought the house 2 years ago, so guessing filter is original and no idea how it was maintained.

As far as the elbow to the lateral assembly, I can't tell if the old one was glued together or not since it's stuck, but is it ok if I don't glue it? I'm not sure I can even get it in the top if it is glued.

Thanks again for all the insight!
