I'm gonna tile my whole gunite pool.

Haha header explains it all. Experienced tiler though never on a pool this size, I've done steam rooms and spas.

My question though is anyone see why 2x2 glass at 3/16ths wouldn't be a suitable choice for the entire shell? I can't find much design wise that I like in a thicker material like 1x1 typically.

Good place to start:

From point 6:
Size matters when it comes to choosing pool tiles. Larger tiles can cover up more space but are less stable and may crack over time due to temperature changes. Smaller tiles on the other hand are more break-resistant and can last longer.

Use epoxy grout.

I'm just so worried the 1x1 is gonna look terrible on anything but a brand new build or extreme extensive mortar bed leveling, so I was considering the faster and a bit more forgiving 2x2 with less grout lines, but overall these tiles seem thinner. I don't really want to do this again in my lifetime so I plan to get it right the first time.

use the 2x2, IMO. They are more forgiving and will be more "to scale" for your pool. I wouldn't be the least concerned about durability.

Tile is the cadillac of pool surfaces.......most of us are jealous already! :):)
Haha don't be jealous! It's gonna be a real bear to install. I just wanted to be sure a 4mm 2x2 product would stand up as well as a 8mm 1x1. I definitely wanted to not have to install 1x1 since this is a custom gunite shell I imagine the surface prep on a bowl so rounded would leave me with visual divots or undulation you might not see as much in a 2x2. I'd do it in 6" if it were not a free form bowl, I wish the previous owners had gone with a square haha.

This is the photo before blasting commenced, just for an idea of size this is about 13x30 in the basin. 4ft to just over 8ft deep. We will do stone coping once all the plumbing guts are refinished, I couldn't see myself tiling the surface/decking, just for the fall hazard. Since it was a diy for the previous owners, there's a lot of weirdness about it that made us ultimately decide that plaster wasn't gonna be durable enough compared to tile, and I certainly don't want to do this again in another 5y!

There's a retaining wall going in along the left and rear end of the pool so a proper fence and seating area can be built up. She's horrific now but come this fall we hope to send project progress pics but, more likely I'll forget and just come back with the final 😅💀Screenshot_20230411_125521_Chrome.jpg
