Pentair Spa won't stay on/heated

This is the first winter with our pool/spa. Pool has been winterized and it totally shut down. The spa is set to run/filter most of the day at 80 degrees. When we turn the temp to 104 on the app prior to use, it will heat for a few minutes then shut totally down. We have to keep turning it back on and it's taking forever to heat the spa. Why? HELP!
Thanks
-Using Pentair ScreenLogic App

What model heater do you have?

How do you turn it back on when it shuts down?

When did you last clean your filter?

What model filter do you have and what is the PSI at what pump RPM?

Lynne,

The question is does the heater quit heating on its own or is ScreenLogic shutting the heater off?

When the heater quits heating is ScreenLogic still telling the heater to heat?

How is your automation connected to the heater? By a simple two wire cable to the heater's fireman's input, or by the RS-485 com port connection?

Are you using the heater's control at all, or are you just using ScreenLogic?

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks--
Hot Tub: 10x10, in ground
Filter: Pentair Clean and Clear Plus. PSI is at 15
Heater: Mastertemp 400
Control Panel: Pentair Easytouch Control System
Phone App: Pentair Screenlogic Connect
We cleaned the filters about a week ago
Our equipment is far from the house & hot tub, during the winter we mostly use our Screenlogic app
Everything was working great until it got really cold (below freezing) -- is there a possible freeze protect and heating conflict?
It's scheduled to never turn off "Spa". When we trying to heat it, Spa turns off and the heaters shuts down. It's easily turned by on from the app, but then it shuts down again.

Lynne,

Do you have the Spa circuit set up to turn on with Freeze? If your spa is set up to run 24/7, then you should not have it set up under freeze control.

Freeze control can override schedules.

Show me (or tell me) your Spa schedule.

What do you mean the "Spa shuts off"? Does the pump just shut off or do the valve move? What happens that makes you say the spa shuts off?

Thanks,

Jim R.

It's currently running from noon to 11:00 am / 23 hours. Good point about the freeze protect not being needed- but not sure how to disable it. We use to run the spa a couple times a day for about 5 hours. Freeze protect turns on automatically at 40 or below.
"Spa shuts off" means on the app the SPA button turns from green to white (means off) and the HEATER button stops flashing (meaning it's not currently heating) SPA off means the circulation jets stop. Good question if the valve turns to the off position at the equipment. It's not moving to POOL anymore so I'm not sure if the actuator is moving. I'll have to go out and watch it.

Lynne,

If the pump shuts off, then will automatically shut off the heater, so the problem is that something is telling the pump to shut off. My guess is that the system does not understand that you are not using the pool and that when it goes into freeze protect it is still trying to switch back and forth between the pool mode and the spa mode.

I suggest that you turn off freeze protect and set your spa circuit to run from 8 am until 8 am, which will keep it running 24/7.

Do you have ScreenLogic on your PC or just your phone? Let me know and I'll tell you what to do.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Great idea. I think you are right! We mainly use the app for schedules and turning up the heat. We go to the panel outside when needed. I'd love to know how to make the changes at the panel. I'll change the schedule to 8-8 on my app. Is the spa pump running 24/7 enough to mimic freeze protect? When FP kicks on, the jets go on. In "Spa" mode, the jets are of, unless we turn them on or if it's colder than 40 degrees. Hope this all makes sense, haha. Thanks!

Lynne,

To see your Circuits you go to Menu, Settings, Circuit Functions. This will show you what is set to come on with freeze. You will have to use the up/dn buttons to scroll through your different "Circuits".

If you run the pump 24/7, you don't need anything set up as on with freeze.

I assume that you currently have Pool, Spa, and Blower set up as on with freeze. You need to set then all to "NO"

Thanks,

Jim R.

I scheduled the spa from 8am to 8am - reduced the jet (freeze protect) rpm to 800 (pool guy's recommendation- he also recommended not to turn off freeze protect) There is NO schedule for the system to switch to pool, obviously since it's 25 degrees here, but it keeps switching to POOL. There is NO pool schedule in my app and when I toggle down to schedule on the main control panel, all areas say 0 except SPA. It says 1. I think that's what's messing up my SPA schedule, it keeps switching to POOL. Frustrating. Especially since our pool builder knows nothing about pools, apparently. He just lined up the subs.

If the freeze protection is kicking on and you have the pool tagged as on with freeze as well as the spa it will rotate the valves every 15 min or so. Make sure you have the freeze protection turned off for the pool or it will engage the pool on a freeze protection event. This is true if you have actually winterized the pool and there is no danger of freeze for the pool.

+1 on this

We are not sure what the pool guy did when he winterized to pool. All valves have been blown out and are off. When it switches to POOL, the valve does not move to pool. We'll go fiddle with the control panel and see what's going on. Thanks for the reply!

You're a genius! Freeze protect WAS on pool AND spa. Pretty sure our $500 shut down fee should have included turning the pool setting off :/ We are learning bit by bit. Thanks so much!

You were exactly right! Pool was set to on. It's working great now!
