VSP issues

I have a Pentair Intelliflo VS3050 that was installed in 2010 (model with control pad but now LCD screen) controlled by a Suntouch. It stopped working over the weekend. When I flip the breaker off and then on again I hear a thunk at the pump but nothing happens. Impeller spins by hand. There is power coming out of the breaker. Any clues before I buy a new pump? Also, I really dislike the Suntouch, do I even need to hook the new pump to the controller or are the onboard controllers enough. I have a 24,000 gallon pool with the Intelliflo and a 3/4hp booster for the Polaris. I'm thinking a 1.5hp replacement would work. Please let me know if I'm incorrect on that assumption. Thanks.

Chad,

Just hearing a clunk is not good enough to know if you have the correct power to the pump.

The first thing to check is that you actually have 240 Volts AC when testing between the two wires going into the pump. (L1 and L2). Make sure you test between L1 and L2, as you can often get a false reading when testing L1 to Ground and then L2 to Ground. You need a voltmeter and not a voltage indicating light.

I also suggest that you disconnect the RS-485 connector and see if the pump will run manually.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks for the help. What is the RS-485 connector? Is that the round black cable coming out of the controller on the top of the motor? I have the correct voltage leaving the breaker. I didn't wand to unhook the wiring on the motor yesterday to check it at the motor itself.

You need to check the voltage at the pump. There is no need to disconnect the wires at the pump to do this. While checking at the breaker is a good first start, there could be an issue between the breaker and pump with the wiring.

The cable between the pump and the Suntouch is the RS-485 cable.
If in doubt, post a few pics of your setup and someone can point you in the right direction.

Chad,

The smaller the pump, the faster you will have to run it to move the same amount of water. The faster the pump, the louder it will be.

If that is not a problem, then the smaller 1.5 HP pump will work just fine.

Why would you not replace it with another IntelliFlo?

Thanks,

Jim R.

I often place a Sun Touch in "solar only" mode and remove the communication cable for customers who are fed up with how that control works. Pentair makes good "stuff," but it seems they crammed too much into that little box. Never had a complaint afterwards. Just takes a bit of learning to control solar the "old-school" way, make sure there is enough flow to fill the panels when the control calls for heat. Not quite as convenient as having the control adjust speeds, but way easier to understand unless you work with one everyday.

Get the larger VSP if you need a new pump, you'll be glad in the long run. If you don't hook the pump to the Sun Touch, any brand of high-head VSP will work. Seems to be very difficult to get Pentair right now.

So I check out the voltage at the motor and it is fine. I unplug the controller cable. Nothing comes on. I flip the breaker one last time and it comes back on. It ran yesterday fine. Today it keeps tripping the breaker after a couple of seconds. The "On" light flashes green and red and the "Alarm" light flashes red. I don't have a manual for this and everything I find online has the LCD screen on it. Any ideas?

So I flipped the breaker on to count the flashing alarm lights. The breaker immediately trip but the light flash for a few seconds. The Alarm light just keeps flashing. The On light flashes 7 times which is the "Power out alarm". So the tripped breaker is getting me a Power Out Alarm. Nothing is really helping with the "why is the breaker tripping immediately problem". Any ideas or should I just get a new pump or motor?

Chad,

If there is nothing between the breaker and the pump, and there is no moisture where the AC wires connect to the pump, then I would assume the pump control head is bad.

At 10 years old, to me anyway, it would make sense to buy a new pump, rather than try to repair the old one.

That said, if you decide to buy a new pump, you can't hurt anything by opening the control head and looking for anything obvious.

Thanks,

Jim R.
