Valve Actuator with no pool controller

Hi.
Helping a friend so details are scarce.
He has manual valves for his pool/spa. I was trying to figure out if its possible to add actuators to the valves without having then connected to a controller.
There was a pretty detailed post on different types of actuators.
They all seem to be 3 wire 24v DC
Is it just a matter of sending the voltage to the respective left or right micro switch for controlling the direction?
Once it hits the limit....I don't think the controller shuts the voltage off....does the micro switch open voltage to the actuator motor?

If it works as simple as i think i can run the power form a 3 position switch to determine which micro switch gets the DC voltage.

Sadly no pics...but i believe he has two valves he needs to manipulate when switching from Pool to Spa.

TIA
Mac

In relation to your other post today about pool pump relays, you could also take a look at the NodeJS Pool Controller project where you use a cheap single board computer (SBC) like a Raspberry Pi to control equipment.

A valve actuator can be run in both directions off one relay/switch. Each relay has three connections: Common (24 VAC power), NC (normally closed) and NO (normally open). The actuators have three connections. The black lead goes to AC power. The other two actuator leads (red and white) power the valve in separate directions. One lead goes to NC and the other to NO. When power is shut off, the motor turns one way and when powered up, it turns the other way. A limit switch in the actuator cuts power to the motor when the valve reaches it's resting position.

Check out the Low Budget Automation link in my sig for some ideas.
