New fiberglass pool build in OBX- Current stage Fence and Landscape.

Great minds think alike. With that, Today happened. :). Still waiting on his crane, but for now they're drilling the holes for returns and lights on the flat bed while waiting for the crane to arrive.
Looks great, very cool looking shape.

Crane never showed, so tomorrow now is the new drop day hopefully. But Im partially not surprised. Crane guys always run at their own pace. When we had to put new HVAC units on my store in TX that was like pulling teeth to get someone out to crane the HVAC units on the roof.

Returns and lights are drilled. IM not super pleased about the light placement in the spa, "R" labeled in the spa is the circulation return. Rest are spa jets. "L" is the light. Asked about making them two "pool mode" returns and then drilling the light into the steps of the spa, but they're afraid of that with how thick the steps are. Id still like to get this done but not sure where to put the light. They wont put anything on the side facing the pool due to lack of clearance. So leaving it as is.

But Pool set up is great. Now there are 3 lights (all facing away from the house) and 4 returns in the pool, and the bubbler will act as a fifth return for the tanning ledge. So pleased about that. Should help really circulate the warm water. Anxious for it to be in the ground however.

I have the same shell but no dedicated spa pump, so it's not comprable but they did put the light in the steps. I never specified where it should go, it just came that way. Viking pools is the manufacturer and it came with all the fittings, including the light, from the factory.

Also our tanning ledge has a light, return and overflow drain. Originally the drain was the light but becasue the shell is out of level it was sticking out of the water, so I had them move it to the other side and make it a overflow drain. There are probably better ways to do an overflow drain in a fiberglass pool, but it's actually come in very handy when I am too lazy to go outside and drain off excess rain. A crew was dispatched by Viking pools to come and drill and install the new fitting.

Well we also ordered all of this to be done by Latham (formally viking, or I think Latham bought viking out) But im guessing just due to everything going on skilled labor isn't what it used to be and none of it was done right, leaving the PB holding the bag. So I took what I can get done and am rolling with it. IM expecting and will be vying for some discounts on the next draw based on what im not getting and the inconveniences caused by none of this being what I agreed to.

Other than that, large crane is here and theyre gearing up now to drop the shell. IM considering having them reverse where the light and "pool mode" return are in the spa, even if it means its shining towards the house. Just because where it is now the min someone sits in front of the jet its going to be blocked.

I have two lights shining towards the house, it sucks, rooky mistake by the builder, but my lights at least had a snap on visor that blocks some of it. I'll post some pics if I can find them to help you decide.

walked out and said "looks like the hard part is done" and PB goes "nope hard part has just begun, now we gotta get it level"

Pretty interesting watching them work. Strings are laid out all over and everyone has lasers and levelers trying to get it perfect. So hopefully I get a great install out of this process at least. Even if I had to give up some bells and whistles.

And this is what the visors look like if you have the same lights as me. They come in quarter and half.

They told me about this and I wasn't sure what they meant. Really appreciate the pics and info, as now I understand the concept. Im still debating, now that I see it in the ground if I swapped the light and return in the spa its going to be shining right in the windows.

I put those (the half shield) on my pool the other day trying to limit the amount of light going up that attracts every living flying insect at night. It keeps the light in the pool but the way the bulbs are are domed it still is totally visible to the bugs so when a night swim is in order we put our patio post lights on at low with no pool lights on and the bugs don't bother us. If you turn pool lights on its like a welcome sign. So we basically don't even use the pool lights. We did use the spa light and with the churning water it seemed to not attract the bugs.

In the ground. Mains are plumbed (well to the surface) and deep end is backfilled. I poured a half gallon of bleach in the water, most likely too much but since nobody is actually swimming I figured more can't hurt right now. Part of the water came from my hose which is through a softener, but the majority came from the hydrant which I have no idea the quality of, especially if it hasn't been blown out in a while. So I'm sure chemistry will be interesting. Color and especially the water tile is really really growing on me. Next little annoyance is he is afraid to convert the included bubbler to the CMP bubbler which will accept a light. Since I've given up so much on this build from the original contract I really hope I can talk them into this. Especially since I was told yesterday we dont need to drill for the light on the tanning lounge as the bubbler has a light.

They hope to have it 100% up and running (other than deck jets) and fully backfilled with sand and flowcrete by Sunday. After that, not much will happen, they might start the deck stairs and moving the outdoor shower depending on the schedule. But he wants the pool to sit for 3-4 weeks to make sure it doesn't settle and the pipes are all water tight. I can live with a month of the back yard being a mess to make sure the install is solid. So if god forbid something does come out of level they can fix it without too much drama.

rant moment...... and the headaches have begun. Just had a 30 min convo with the pb over the phone. He wanted his next draw. but said "there's going to be added fees for all the extras" and I said hold up what about all the things not being done. Plus there are things in the contract we both signed that now hes saying "I didn't factor doing a b or c to install" like deck jets. Well sorry thats not my problem.

Also making major complaints about the 3" plumbing and how much more difficult that is than 2", and how the costs are going to be "significantly" more than expected for plumbing. Again not my problem, yet to him it is. I just dont see the point of a contract if at any time the builder can say "oh that cost me more than I thought, pay up or stop we working". I looked up pricing for PVC in the area, its about 60 bucks for 20 feet of 2" and about 94 bucks for 20 feet of 3", fine you ordered X feet, I will cover the difference. But running 2" or 3" pipe in the same trench isn't any more labor intensive.

What just ****** me off about the whole thing was everything we removed (extensive list) is "oh that wont save you much you will be disappointed to see how little that actually saves you" and the couple things we changed over the last couple weeks are "thats impossible to do and takes a lot of labor and materials, im not making any money on this job already and dont want to use my money to finish your pool". So like the skimmer and bubblers, that involves running PVC. "oh that wont save you much" very next sentence "running PVC is expensive". I think he waited to have this conversation with me until the shell was in the ground as until then I would have said lets part ways and found someone else to put a pool in. But now with the shell I doubt I could ever find anyone to take it over from this point, and I dont blame them.

So thats where I am. Hole in the ground with a beautiful shell, and no idea if/when it will be completed. Im not paying extra for things already in a signed contract, just because you aren't experienced enough to factor in all thats needed to do what is in said contract. I really dont understand why in this new world its an argument to do anything, I just had a major argument with the dealership I bought a car from last month about how the quality it showed up with was terrible and to take it back (literally brand new car showed up with service engine light, leaking sunroof and scratches all over), they offered me a trade in value and I took it just to dump it and avoid the headache, then after two weeks called and Said "where's my money" and they say back "oh the market has shifted we can offer you even less for it now" With no consideration to how horrible of service I had gotten from them. If I ran any of my companies this way id be bankrupt. Seriously this new world were in has ruined any decency/morals people had.

If I ever have to build a pool again im going the Owner built route. Probably just as much headache, but at least I could do a lot of the things he claiming are "extra" myself.

Ok rant over..... Next year this time hopefully im swimming, have a new pier, and have taken delivery of my shiny new Malibu boat. Until then, where's the adult beverages?

If you are going to go down that path check the price difference of 90s and valves you will need. All those add up.

I sympathize with your outrage.

Seems disingenuous on his part. This thinking started in 08-09 when people just said here's my keys I'm not paying my mortgage, now its student loans, etc. You take a loan out it is your responsibility, you sign a contract you honor the contract. Where is the moral compass here. If the contract has a clause for increased supply costs, ok but it's not being abused to just tack on when they underbid or lost money on another build and they have you by the short hairs. I hope this gets worked out. These stories are becoming more frequent unfortunately.

I have a BIG MAD and gurrrrrrrrrrrr for you!
Here is a cold adult beverage for you
