I have a 19.6k fiberglass saltwater pool all my numbers are balanced then all of a sudden 10 days after my water test at the pool store my CC was at an 18 with FC at 1.50. The whole pool game is new to me and it is my first season. Water is crystal clear and the automatic cover has been on it for almost a month straight never opening it due to kids. Only been in it briefly once. My guess is I have never shocked it and the cover is trapping in the chlorine? Should I be opening my pool more to let it “breath”and shocking it weekly? Advice needed. Thanks

It may be ammonia. How are you testing to get CC of 18.

You might try:
  1. Add chlorine for 10 ppm and test your free chlorine after 30-minutes. You likely have ammonia in your water if you lost 80%+ of FC in 30 minutes
  2. Your CC tests > 0.5

Possibly, new pool not much was done to the water except shocking I think at close last November when it was finished construction. Opened clear and shocked. CYA was at 0 and FC was normal and so was CC. I added CYA and calcium and was in range. 60 CYA AND 250 hardness. Those numbers are still the same but now the huge jump in CC.

Pool store test. CYA is at 60 and has been the same.

Did you use a non-chlorine shock product recently? That will screw up CC testing for a while.
I have not everything was perfect 10 days ago. Don’t understand how it got that high. Maybe fertilizer got into here somehow or never taking the auto cover off?? My salt cell is set at 27%. No clue. Let it sit in the sun all day today will test again tomorrow and see where to go from there.

As far as I know a cover can trap in CCs. But I am not sure HOW much they can trap, 18 sounds like a lot. But if you are holding chlorine and CYA, it's unlikely to be ammonia. I would leave your cover open for a day and retest? FC at 1.5 with a SWG at 27% also doesn't sound right and is too low a level with 60 CYA so something could be going on in the water to create CCs that are being trapped under the cover. I would assume you need to preform a SLAM

Also, it's hard for us to give advice with pool store results, as they are often completely wrong. Do you have your own drop test kit? It would be extremely beneficial to you to stop going to the pool store and instead order a test kit. Either the TF Pro (uncheck the salt strips and ph meter) or the Taylor k2006c. I would highly suggest getting the speed stir, too.
Both are expensive, yes, but they last a long time and in the long run, they save you time and money as you do not add the wrong things to your pool at the advice of the pool store with bad testing - which can results in a merry-go-round of chemical soup that ruins your water.

Also, fill out your signature with your pool info - see other posters for examples - this also helps us to quickly make suggestions to you.

Ok so pool company had me throw a ton of chlorine in the pool. Again my water in the pool was crystal clear. Pump was on 60gpm within 3 hours the entire filter system was clogged. Here are the pictures. Also that white stuff covered the entire bottom of my pool. What is this?? Got everything cleaned out of the filter and cleaned the walls and bottom of pool with vacuum. Turned it on again looks better. Still a ton of chlorine in the pool though 18 hours later. What is this stuff???

To assist, we really need to get a feel on your chemical levels, and we don't really trust the readouts that pool stores give. I would get one of the recommended test kits, run the tests, and post your results so we can help you without guesswork clouding things up. :)

You could try putting some of that white stuff somewhere that acid won't damage (in a glass or something) and put a little muriatic acid on it to see if it fizzes. If so then it's probably calcium scale.

TA IS 73. The water did have all the signs bad chlorine smell burned your nostrils just walking around the pool

You cannot test a value of 73 for TA.
Something is off if you can hold FC but have high CC and a chlorine smell.

What is the cost of your water? A large exchange to fresh is likely the easiest path.
