Baja step design question for a rectangular pool - baja spans 10 x 6.5 feet and will be 9 inches deep in water depth (15 inches from coping) Pool is 16 x 34 feet with elevated spa. Should second step of baja span width of the pool or be part of other steps so Baja is straight drop which is 3 1/2 water depth (4 feet from coping)? Want to maximize swimming space but also have functional entry and exit from diferent spots kids ages 10 and 13 and two mid-size dogs (18 pounds) Would appreciate input you have for those with baja shelves. Thanks!

This pool has the steps at a 45, smallest foot print on the pool floor. Also has a reef step with a straight drop off to 3 1/2 depth.

I would leave them like they are in the pic. This does allow for more pool space. You could go with the smaller corner steps to get even more pool space. One thing I WOULD to is use tile to mark the edge of the shelf and steps. It is pretty and can help with safety.

Think about having a small corner step on your shelf to help people and dogs getting in and out of the pool from the shelf. 15" is quite a big step to go from the shelf to the coping.

Thank you! Yes, adding corner entry step. Pics 1 and 2 are slightly different. One pic has second step extending all the way across shallow end and the other just isolated to the steps.

I agree with some here, while staircases in water are pretty, when you can see them, you are building a "swimming" pool too. I quickly found with ours that a baja shelf and benches get almost no use, and they take up precious swimming and play space.
