Spa chemicals

I’m looking to buy dichlor for my hot tub, but I can’t for the life of me find any, because I don’t know a product name. (When I search for dichlor on any of my local pool store websites, it comes up with no results).
Can anyone recommend a few products for me? Bonus if you’re Canadian so I have a better chance of finding it in my area. Ie...is Spa Guards Spa Lite product dichlor? (I also can’t find an ingredient list online). Thanks!!

Thanks for your reply. I’m not sure if it’s a pandemic shortage problem, but none of those is available in Canada right now....

When I search “dichlor granules” on Amazon.ca, I get a list of “chlorinating granules” products. I’m assuming this is chlorine and not dichlor right?

“Dichloro-S-Triazinetrione” is dichlor. You have to look at the ingredients and see what form of chlorine it is.

The ones for pools sometimes have “blue” in the name so u want to steer clear of those. I use spa selections from walmart - it’s 99% dichlor but i’m in the us.

i have only used 1 container in over 2 years.
like i was saying u can just use the same stabilizer you use in your pool in the spa & then just continue on w/ liquid chlorine & the swg. I also have a swg but i still use the chlorine side of theFC/CYA Levels as I never want to risk bacteria soup 🤢 & the cya is only 30 or 40. Any higher & you have a hard time staying sanitary .
The slam/ shock levels are the same.

Hi, I need a bit (or a lot) of guidance with my hot tub chemistry, some things are WAY off....in case it matters, it's a new tub, filled 2 days ago.

Readings taken just now:

Temp 102
pH 7.5
FC 12 (I added Dichlor about an hour ago, because I had no FC, I overshot a bit)
CC 2
CH 25
TA 120
CYA 0

I did read the sticky note on how to care for a hot tub using the chlorine method, but I don't even know where to start with the CH and TA being so off of what is recommended.

Thanks!!

Your CH And TA are ok.

Keeping CH at at least 100ppm to 150ppm reduces foaming. That is the only reason to fiddle with it.

Focus on your FC and pH. Those are the important values.

Adding 20 ppm of CYA will reduce the harshness of chlorine.

Keep track of how much dichlor you’ve added and stop using it when your calculated cya reaches 30 ppm & switch to bleach.
PoolMath effects of adding will show u how much cya was in your last dose - it will not be measurable on the test until at least 20ppm. Use your calculated amount in poolmath when determining fc additions.
When your ph rises to 7.9 or 8 add enough muriatic acid to lower it to 7.2 - over time this will reduce your ta & make your ph adjustments less frequent.
My ch is 25 & i never add any so don’t sweat it unless u have a foaming issue as stated above 😁

OK, just re-tested. FC is down to 7 and CC is now 0.5, pH remains at 7.6, so I think we're on the right track. But, I have to say, that was a quick drop in chlorine, in just a few hours (no one has been in the tub today). Is this typical? If it is, how do people keep up with the chlorine levels when you're busy and not using the tub for a few days? Can you use one of those floating things with pucks that slowly releases chlorine?

Once the FC drops more, to 3 or less, I'll keep adding Dichlor to acheive FC of around 6, until the calculated CYA is closer to 30, if I'm understanding correctly. I'll then switch to bleach to maintain my chlorine levels.

Last question, if need be, do you SLAM a hot tub the same way you SLAM a pool? (I pride myself on keeping my CC at 0 for my pool, LOL)

There is nothing to be gained by obsessing on keeping CC at 0. CC is a natural byproduct of the chlorine doing its job. With a hot tubs small water volume and high bather load you will always have some CC.

OK, next quetion. I'm testing my 2-3 times/day right now because we're using the tub a few times a day. I test before each use, adjust slightly then we use it. I'm adding sanitizer everday, or twice a day even. Is it OK to use the floating things with chlorine pucks, that slowly release the chlorine continually instead of dosing with chlorine every day?

Unfortunately, without an SWG continuously producing chlorine, a hot tub needs daily chemical additions when it is running and in use. You CAN NOT use trichlor tabs in a spa. They are highly acidic and dissolve too quickly above 90F. You will crash the pH of the tub and drive your FC & CYA through the roof ...

Welcome to “joys” of hot tub ownership...

I’ve had my hot tub for several years and the very first ahhsome purge I did was by FAR the grossest. Knowing what I know I would 100% do a purge before you ever use the hot tub. You may not even be able to get the water clear and fresh without doing an initial purge. Mine was a nightmare until I did the first purge.

If u want less adding then a drop in swg is well worth the $ & does the heavy lifting.
I have a saltron mini & have been very happy with it. I still add a splash of bleach after extended soaks / large bather loads sometimes & then sometimes i just press the button.
Theres also the chlor maker - it costs a little more initially but the replacement cells are similar in price.

Unfortunately in the climate I live in, doing a purge is really not an option right now. We should be warning up in 4-6 weeks, so I can definitely do one then. I’m anxious to see the difference it will make!!

Do you purge every 3-4 mths (with every water change)?
