My pool guy (who i use just for opening and closing) said i do not. I keep an eye on the pressure all summer and it is always between 15 and 20. Assuming it stays there is there any reason to backwash?

We recommend that you backwash when the pressure increase by 25%. In my mind your 20 lb limit, is close enough... I would certainly backwash before closing the pool for the winter..

Just know that any buildup on top of the sand can also aid filtering. I also rely on the actual pressure of the returns to tell me when to backwash.
So if it stays where it is then no need for back washing until winter closing?
The key is the filter pressure.. As long as it does not go up, you are ok.. We have a number of people here that only clean their cartridge filters once a year.. I clean mine twice a year only because I have OCD...
I live in Texas, so my pool is never closed...
