I use the Solar-Breeze skimmer. Like you anticipate, I found that the VS pump really did not keep up with the debris on the surface at low speeds. It is pricey, but it works very well for me - plus it's solar powered so your pump doesn't need to be running for it to work.

We have a sport pool - 3.5, 6, 3.5 - 34' long. Can't say that we've missed having a deep end, but the whole family, (kids are adults, no grandkids yet), uses every bit of it. Volleyball and badminton are always fun. We don't have a sun step but we do have a nice long deep ledge to sit on...
