Pool Build -- Annapolis, MD

Ugh! What a jerk indeed.

Stay on this Helen. Inspect everything that the electrician does and make sure to raise any concern, no matter how small, to the PB. You are in the right here and it's up to the PB to fix anything you don't like.

For example, when the electrician is done hooking up to your main panel, pull the front of the panel off and look at how it is wired. Make sure he did not try to splice any wiring into existing lines or double-up wires running into breakers. I've seen some crazy, hack-job wiring done in various places I've lived. Check every detail you can think of. If you think it's not right, take a picture and post it. We have lots of members on here who are excellent electricians and can spot a hoopty-job from a mile away.

Good luck.

That sounds odd but who knows what he's got going on in his head.

Tell you what, just snap a picture after they leave and we can all take a look. The front panel is usually only held on by 4 screws and when you open it up you can see all the breakers and wiring. If you get a picture of that, we should be able to dissect it.

No worries, we got your back in this ;)

Wow Helen. I'm so sorry to hear that the electrician is trying to take shortcuts, and is also being a jerk in the process.

Perhaps he doesn't like working with engineers because he is Forced to do his job correctly. The average person may not realize how many corners he's been trying to cut, and what could happen because of the unnecessary shortcuts? It sounds like to me this might just be a frequent thing for this particular electrician to Try to get away with, but he got called on it this time.

IMO if he was doing his job correctly every single time it wouldn't make a difference who he was working with because the job would be done safely, be up to code, and pass inspection without incidence. I suspect he decided to come on back out there, and do it now, after saying it would be a week because he knew his head was on the chopping block, he knew he messed up big time, and his days on that job were limited.

Hang in there Helen, and settle for nothing less than what you deserve, and that is to have ALL the work you are paying for to be done correctly. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he gets it all done correctly. Have a wonderful day. :)

Greg met with PB this afternoon. Our electrician wants to run wire through PVC through the attic (where its too hot for PVC), then mount the secondary panel on a piece of plywood nailed to a 2x4 hammered in the ground instead of wall mounting it. The 1st thing is not to code and the second is just shoddy workmanship. Seriously, doing it right would cost only tens of extra dollars extra. He got the "as long as its to code, its OK with us" line from the PB. Sooooo, Greg is going to mount a **** panel to the brick wall himself, as well as the "upgraded" conduit on the exterior of the house -- materials are about $50. We'll let the county inspector address the PVC in the attic. Suffice it to say, one of us will be there to point out that it does not meet code. For all of this aggravation, the upgraded tubing thru the attic would cost about $20 more than PVC.

BUT, I came home and saw my pool tiles together and I gotta say, I really love them. Got an email back from a lady here in Maryland that makes mosaics with lightstream tiles, and I am going to order a couple/few for whimsy. And I had a glass of wine. Gonna let electrician stress just go away, lol. And then I gonna post a picture for Matt and make sure its done right!

Bless your hearts.

You are from KY, very south from me. Is "bless your hearts" a put down here??? lol, pls say no! Southern women scare me!

Running a PVC conduit makes no sense to me. I can see using metal-sheathed cabling (Romex type cabling) to run inside the attic and across the house. As long as the cabling is properly tied down (usually need cabling tied down every few feet to interior studs), I don't see why a conduit is needed. As long as the gauge of the wire is sufficient to handle the amperage, most metal sheathed cabling is adequate for interior wall runs.

Assuming you don't want a PVC conduit, what were your thoughts on running power out to the sub-panel? Below ground? How far is it?

"Bless your heart"=I am so sorry to hear that you are having a hard time and wish I could help.

"Well bless your/their/his/her little heart"=put down! It is the "well" that does it LOL

Pound a 2x4 down and nail a board to it???????? AH NO! (insert adult words) There is NO reason you equipment should not look nice and professional!

I would have to ask the PB if he REALLY wants you to "show off" the work HIS company did! Because it is HIS companies name on the letter head and such!

Just got word that the annoying electrician isn't going to do our house -- he still simply refuses to do the job the way Greg wants it done. One has to wonder how he even stays in business with such an unprofessional approach to his work. The PB and Greg negotiated a payment adjustment to allow us to contract with someone else for electrical connections. Evidently, it was amicably resolved and the PB understands that its our house and our prerogative to get what we are asking and paying for, and he agrees that the electrician is intractable at this point. I'm sure we aren't the PB's easiest clients, given that Greg has been building commercial facilities (including large regional public pools!!) for many years, but everything has been handled professionally on both ends. This is a big relief to me, and it delays our pool opening by... NO DAYS WHATSOEVER because we aren't getting plastered until early Spring.
:paddle:

Oh, I hope you both get "plastered" way before then....the holidays are coming up ;)

Glad to hear you ditched that bum electrician. Definitely interview a bunch of electrical contractors if you haven't already gotten one nailed down. My experience with electrical contractors has always had big disparities in quotes. Not sure why.

Haha, I may get plastered before the sun sets after the day I've had!!!

We're going to bring back the electrician who upgraded our panel a couple of weeks ago. He does pools for another company so he can certainly handle this. He'll pull a new permit, etc, and we will be on our way!

I'm so glad to hear that he's no longer in the picture. No doubt you guys will be much happier with someone else, lol probably anybody else, as big of a jerk as he has been. Hang in there it sounds like you guys are on the right track now for sure. Have a wonderful day, and have one for me.

Six weeks in. We're moving forward again after the electrician issues (had to hire a new electrician, caused significant delays), and just passed inspection. PB dropped off waterline tiles and is scheduling tile guys for this week, weather permitting. Which means backfill and decking next week -- woohoo! An end to the ever-present dirt tracking into my house!
