Wow, thanks, Kim! I'll tell TH, he will get a good laugh!

Better yet, I just read him your post and he said, "Ask her, who has time for **** like that?" Hahaha, sour grapes!

It will be fine. They just want to sell you some more stuff! They HATE when you do your own testing and KNOW what to add without them being able to add more to the basket!

There are THOUSANDS of people using TFP to keep their pools clear. We KNOW it works and have the science to back it up.

Tell TH that I do this instead of watching TV. Helping people or staring at the a TV? LOL

Your "clean" pressure is whatever the filter reads after it is cleaned and the pumps are running. It is odd that your filter pressure was running at 10psi and now after cleaning reads 15psi. I'm wondering, after all the crud you've been nuking in the pool water if the filter cartridge material is plugged up. I'm not as familiar with the "life cycle" of a cartridge and how their age over time relates to the system pressure but it may be time for a deep cleaning of the cartridge overnight. I don't know, others will have to comment.

As for the stains, onBalance's response was superb! It is likely they are calcium scaling stains but it's hard to know and we shouldn't do anything until your SLAM is complete. We are going to need accurate pH, TA and CH test results in order to know where to go and you cannot do those tests during a SLAM.

So be patient and get through your SLAM first.

Ok, back to business. I'm rereading "technical" info and I'm concerned about the change in psi. Do you think eliminating air in the basket and cleaning out the filters raised the psi? TH said the basket has been "still" before to the point that he thought there was no water in it and he opened it up but it was just that the basket was clear and no air. He said the psi was 10.......but he's not a technical person like me so i can't be for sure.
Also, he just purchased 4 new filter cartridges this spring so they are only a few months old. Yesterday was the 3rd time they have been cleaned out.

Yes, I will get through the SLAM first, but re: the stains, could the CH affect the stains? (Pool store said the high CH is causing scaling. I'm all in with TFP, but I reference pool store recommendations for my information). At the begining of this journey the CH was 750! Its slowly gone down to 675 a couple of days ago.

Ok, thanks for the asuurance, just had to ask.
Touche to your reply to TH. I'll tell him......esp since he was watching the "tube" when he made that remark.

There are methods for deep cleaning cartridges that require the use of large garbage cans and trisodium phosphate cleaners (degreasing cleaners). I'm not an expert so others will have to chime in with advice. There are also acidic cleaning procedures to remove calcium scale build up if the cartridges get "limed up". You do degreasing BEFORE de-liming.

As for CH, yes CH is directly related to staining but it is not the only factor. The simple way to think about it is - high pH + high CH + high TA = scaling. This is why we need to get through the SLAM and get those other numbers. Once we get a full set of water test results, we can plug the numbers into PoolMath and calculate your water's CSI (calcite saturation index). The CSI (no, not the TV show ;) ) will tell us where to go.

FYI - my pool has a CH of 725ppm and I get absolutely no scaling on my tiles as I control my water balance.

Ok, thank you. Good to know.
Before I started the SLAM, my pH was on the low side (between 6.8 and 7.2) and TA was normal (90). I know we can't test for pH and TA during the SLAM (and CYA, right?) so pray I get through the SLAM SOON!
Now I'm off to brushing my baby (you should see my arms, how do you spell definition?!)

Schwarzenegger, as in Aaaaaaaaaaaaa-nold! :D

My wife often complains that she doesn't get as much time as she'd like to exercise with work & kids and I quip back that she can always grab the wall brush and have at it! She then quips back at me that she would never want to come between me and my one, true love...the pool. So TFP also doubles as good form of couples-therapy ;)

A little insight into the pool store and their usual 'freaking out' about high chlorine levels.

Remember just about all pool stores completely ignore the relationship between CYA and chlorine. If you had 0 CYA then yes, your high chlorine levels could definitely cause damage. *BUT* and it's BIG but...you *do* have CYA and not only that you know what level it is because you tested it yourself.

The CYA is buffering that chlorine and the SLAM level you're using has been figured directly in proportion to your CYA level to be safe for your pool and equipment.

The pool store will tell people to always keep their chlorine between 1 and 3 and at the same time continue to sell them products that raise their CYA through the roof making their chlorine totally ineffective.

It's unfortunate that the pool stores just don't pay attention to CYA but it is what it is and it's why a lot of people end up with green pools and find TFP when looking for a solution.

Good thing we're here to help! :)

Also, your water may be balanced now but that doesn't mean it was balanced in the past. I had a really bad scale develop on my tiles one winter because I let the water go and was not watching it. Some folks don't realize it, but water temperature has a significant impact on CSI. As the temperature of the water goes down (and up) you may need to adjust pH and TA targets to compensate. I often have to keep my pH and TA lower in the summer months to stay negative on the CSI and then let them drift up higher in the winter. During that winter season where I was ignoring my pool (testing very infrequently), my pH probably got way too high and my beautiful blue tiling was covered in ugly white/grey calcium scale. Since there was no easy way to acid clean it all, that little "experiment" cost me ~$300 to fix as I had to bring in a contractor that did soda blasting to remove the calcium. The tiles looked beautiful now and I have had no more scale develop since being much more careful about my CSI.

Ha, ha, good one! Absolutely good couples therapy, TH is jealous of the attention TFP is getting and thus talking to me more trying to get MY attention! Thank you TFP :p

Definitely. TW always knows when I'm on TFP and she definitely talks to me more when I'm checking TFP. She jokes with me to stop talking to my online girlfriends and "bros" and try talking to her :) I let her know that she has nothing to worry about as my one, true love is the pool....that gets her steamed and makes for some good laughter. I tell her all the time that if she wants to take on the pool care, she can have all the TFP "boyfriends" she wants....we both laugh about it and are good-sports so it's all in good fun.

Of course, now that she knows that my pool skills are not some form of voodoo wizardry that I have developed and nothing more than becoming a TFP member, she reminds me that I can be replaced with a younger, more-buff pool boy at anytime ;)

THANK YOU TFP!!! And I'm not even done yet!

I can see the main drains clearly in the shade on my phone and it looks like your about 5 feet back. That is awesome. Looking great. [emoji3]

Just in case you haven't noticed the change in your avatar line, you are now a "Senior Member". When I have questions now I now know who to ask.

You know, I noticed that a few days ago I was wondering if it was a typo, and hoping no one would lose their job over that LOL. Ask me for advice?? Well you know what they say about the prudence of asking advice of a person who has a little information. ?

But, when I told TH about this, he didn't laugh. I think I'm going to create a hook and brush combo for the long pole so I can clean out those drains. Can you tell me what I can expect once I take the top off? Is there a basket?

There's no basket, just a large opening about the size of a cereal bowl but a little deeper. One of you could put on a mask & do a swim-by. If all you see is white then you don't need to do anything. If it's dark then cleaning could help you pass the OCLT. Mine just had two screws holding on the cover. Make sure the filter is off! I've heard some real horror stories about bottom drains although I believe they involved large commercial pools.

TWO SCREWS???? Two drains, at 8' down? Uh......plan B anyone?
