New to me pool - Progress pics

Pressure washers are fine so long as you're not an idiot. Start back some and slowly move in closer and you'll find the sweet spot of becoming clean without stressing the pleats too much.

I'm sure it's exactly what you did. Lol.

Had you shocked, nothing would have grown and therin lies the conundrum. :ROFLMAO:

But yeah, you're seeing the small filter in action right now. A filter that's 3x as large would go 3 times longer. Which still isn't great depending on how bad the algae is, but it's something. With no algae, the large filter will go months and months. Many of us don't even need to clean it each season, but we do for good practice at least once.

Gotcha. Yeah I'm excited for the new pump/filter/swg/light coming this week.

Water is looking far more clear now, but even after some brushing the plaster has a green/brownish tinge to it.

I'm going to assume it's just more iron that deposited, unless it takes more time for the algae to clear.

Chlorine is holding nice and high.

I might try putting some ascorbic acid in a sock and rubbing it on some of the spots to see if it removes the stains, if so it's just more iron.

Kind of disappointing, I thought I had done pretty well, however that doesn't appear to be the case lol.

Probably not the best, but a test at Leslies.
HOWD YOU KNOW ???? :ROFLMAO:

Leslie's stated variance is +/- 0.3 at 0.3. So your 0.1 means it could be 0 to 0.4, if it was perfectly calibrated. You very well may have added high iron content water back when you refilled, and also got algae after.

Some of the green poofs and the rest got right to work making new stains. Have a thorough read below.

I see.

Since I am in the process of SLAMing the pool, my best bet would be to filter the water through polyfil stuffed into the skimmer.

Otherwise, filtering the water before adding.

Ill go get some :)

Do you ever get rusty water ? With my old furnace at my old place the water hammer would make it go brown for 30 seconds if something else used hot water while we were in the shower or running a bath. Replacing the furnace fixed it but I still have PTSD about it.

When filling pool #2, I made everyone come tell me they needed to use water so I could turn the pool off. Mrs was teasing me that we didn't have the old problem at the newer place but I told her it was super easy to not find out the hard way.

You had iron issues, refilled with theoretically low iron water, and still have issues. The home plumbing could be contributing.

Everything was replaced with PEX, any iron is from city side.

Yeah... Little spots of rust are appearing now.

Well shoot. I'll leave the polyfil in the skimmer and see how it goes.

I have a feeling that I may need to wait for the chlorine to burn off, then do another asborbic acid treatment.

I really don't want to drain and refill again, as I'll have to go through more chems lol.

just fill a poolsock with Polyfil, then shove it into the skimmer basket and let it run for a day or two
Its so woven together you don't even need the sock.
let it run for a day or two
It'll slowly filter any iron that is out of solution. It may take a while but you'll know it's working when you can wring out iced tea from the polyfill. Then rinse it and put it right back in.

Yeah, and we're right back to square one, so another drain refills with more bad water. You may have to tweak the PH and FC to pull the iron out of solution so you can figure it.

Yeah I think so. I wonder if there is more Iron leeching out, given how bad it was. My plaster is pretty old... its porous.

I can scrub the spots and they dont come off, so im assuming its iron redepositing onto the plaster. I have yet to test with Ascorbic but my gut feeling tells me its that.

My tentative game plan may be....

Let Chlorine drop to normal levels
Balance PH/Alk
Remove filters
Chlorine to 0, Ascorbic Acid treat the surface (again)
Filters + Polyfill back in skimmer + add drain pump into 5g Polyfil bucket (faster filtering)
*slowly* add chlorine

Thoughts on this?

Or am I wasting my time, and should just get it replastered lol.

It could be algae thats got a deep hold of the aged plaster. Running an elevated FC after the slam may lessen it over time.

Tough call how long you can kick the replaster can down the road. Here's the AA info for a refresher

New equipment is delivered today.

Going to pipe everything on the pad for 2in.

Are there any reasons for me to install any check valves?

I kinda want to run a splitter valve and turn it into a drain for when I need to lower the level before rain (no drain in pool atm, I have to throw a pump in)

*after the rain.

I manipulate the weather with my pool water level. If i want a big storm to fizzle out before it gets to me, I lower before and *poof*, I have to add water. If I want us to get a ton of rain because the grass needs it, I leave the pool full and *poof* i need to drain 6 inches. #lifehack. #Murphysucks.

My PB gave me a 3 way between the pump and cartridge filter for draining on my first pool before I knew anything about anything. I didn't use it often but when I did it really really came in handy. It's also great for vac to waste after big storms (kill 2 birds lowering the pool and getting rid of the crud) or heavy cleanup in the spring after slacking or being closed for the winter.

But yeah. It was high on the priority list for pool #2 after moving.

Do you think I need something like a Jandy 3 way valve for that, or can I just use a T, with a valve on the drain side only?

You definitely want a 3 way diverter so you can vac to waste, otherwise half goes back in the pool. Also, draining will take a little longer with a T.

That's algae. Your old, tiny, filter isn't helping and ascorbic acid kills chlorine levels.

I don't believe that it is.

I just did another AA treatment and everything just disappeared, except for a few spot where there is rusting on the bottom of the pool.

I have yet to reintroduce chlorine, as I want to have these rust spots lift. It's been about 12 hours.

Is this from metal in the gunite eeking through, or just negligence from prior owner?

All of the spots you see are rust spots, and the are heavily concentrated in a spot on the shallowest end of the pool, and near the drain of the deep end. Rest of the pool is mostly clear.PXL_20250318_155827745.jpgPXL_20250318_155757233.jpg

I would almost bet that someone had a BB gun and shot into the pool. That's when I have seen those tiny rust spots.
