Hayward S200: time to replace the sand. What is the cheapest solution that works per lb?

That should work fine.

Why do you need to replace the sand? Unless you have pumped floc and/ or clarifier through it there typically is no reason to change the sand.

Probably. My dad poured lots of stuff through it before we figured out that anything besides CYA and Chlorine were wastes of money. It's also likely been about a decade since we changed it, and I see some sand escaping into the pool after backwashes.

Sand coming out means you have a compromised lateral.

Just wanted to be sure you knew that sand does not ‘wear’ out.

You need to remove all the sand to check a lateral. You can decide whether to deep clean and reuse the sand or replace at that time.

A little sand is lost during each backwash. After 10 years, you likely don't have 200 lb. of sand in that tank. Most of the time, a 24" sand filter (300 lb.) needs a bag added after about 5 years.
If you are going to inspect the laterals you will need to remove all the sand from the tank. It is very hard to estimate how much you have if you save it, especially since it is now wet, vs how much more you may need.
Shouldn't cost much more than $100.00 to replace it with new and know that you will be good for at least 5 years.
