Jandy Pump start issue

I have a Jandy Pro Stealth Pump with a 2.5HP, 2 speed, Century motor. The pump is 5 years old. It’s scheduled to run for 2 hours in the morning and evening and 4 hours on slow speed overnight.

Each time it starts, it makes a really loud noise/hum at least 2-3 times before the pump starts. It’s roughly 30 seconds between each attempt. Once it starts, it runs fine. It’s done this for 2 weeks and its not getting noticeably worse or better.

I assumed it was the start capacitor so I tested it with my multimeter for capacitance and it was fine. I replaced anyway to be on the safe side. Nothing changed.

Considering it’s running 8 hours/day once stated, i ruled out blockage of the impeller. What else should I troubleshoot? ThanksIMG_4806.jpeg

Unbolt the volute and inspect the condition of the impeller. See if it is rubbing on the shroud.

Either you have something rubbing with friction on startup or a problem with the motor internals.

The rust pattern on the motor casing is usually an indication of a motor that has been overheating. I would suspect that you have a motor with an internal problem, probably in the windings, and you should plan on a new motor in the near future.
Interestingly, a 2-speed motor that has a hard time starting on "high" will often start easily on the low speed.
