Hello I need help my Sta-Rite Max-E-Therm 400 heater shuts off when it gets to 86f with an e06 error message and service heater light turns on, I tried resetting the heater to no success. Should I start with replacing the stack flue sensor?

Welcome to TFP.

Watch what the stack flue temperature is before it throws the E06 erros.

With the older 5 button keypad heaters you hold down POOL or SPA button for at least 10 seconds to display the exhaust temp. With the 6 button connected heater model you go to MENU - SFS TEMP to display the exhaust temp. Normal temps should be ~290-350.

An E06 is a shorted sensor. You can try replacing the sensor.

Note that we hear about a lot of defective new stack flue sensors. Especially knockoff ones. The part number for the Stack Flue Sensor is Pentair 42002-0024S. The generic ones found on Amazon for about $15.00 seem to work as well as the Pentair $150 sensor. The sensor should be tested with an ohm meter (3.8 MegOhms @ 77F)

Thank you. Let me try checking the sfs Temp and go from there

I replaced the sfs now I get e05 error message

Did you test the new SFS with a multimeter?

E05 errors are due to things like a sooted exchanger(fuel delivery, venting), scaled up exchanger (water side), or a low water flow.

E05 error can also be an open sensor so check you have it correctly connected.

I'm going to purchase the meter to test the sfs in the morning

When did you last clean your filter?

What model filter do you have?

What model pump do you have?

That is quite a setup with six pumps and a very large sand filter.

What is the PSI on the gauge on the filter?

When was the filter last backwashed?

Is this it?
  • Always!! Turn off the pump when changing the backwash valve positions!!
  • Always turn the MPV handle in one direction. Not back and forth or you will tear the spider gasket.
  • Be careful that you do not drain water below your skimmer intake. Put a fill water hose in your pool if you do not have an auto fill line.

To backwash the filter...
  1. Turn the pump off.
  2. Turn the multiport to "backwash" and restart the pump, watch the view-glass or the end of the discharge hose to see when the backwashed water becomes ~clear - 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  3. Turn off the pump
  4. When it is fairly clear, turn the multi to "rinse"
  5. Turn on the pump for 30 seconds,
  6. Turn off the pump
  7. Repeat 2-6 two more times
  8. Turn the handle to FILTER
  9. Turn on the pump
  10. Record what your filter pressure is as your clean PSI. You should backwash the filter anytime the PSI rises 25% from the clean pressure.
