The last two times I cleaned my filter I found a lot of sand in the housing. I don’t have any sand anywhere nearby. I have attached a picture, the pool is 13 years old, salt water. I’m thinking the gunite or finish is deteriorating. Thoughts? Thanks

Sahara dust storms. Got most of us across Florida and Texas, other Southern states at times. Mostly subsided, worse a couple months ago. Health notices, talked of closing Disney, etc. My cartridge filter was a dark brown rusty color & some sand in the bottom of pool and spa. A buddy of mine had about 1/8" of sand in the bottom of his spa. Eg What to know about Saharan dust affecting the US and how it can affect health

It might be the Krystalkrete cement dissolving allowing the aggregate to come out.

What exact finish do you have?

What type?

Salt and Pepper?

Blue Pepper?

The particles look a lot like the aggregate in the plaster.

Periodic low CSI can contribute to the cement dissolving and making the aggregate fall out.

Yes it looks to me to be Blue Pepper. We are fairly new to pools, we just bought the house two years ago and we are first time pool owners. The pool was neglected before us, we are learning how to take care of it. It’s 13 years old so we are thinking it needs to be refinished unfortunately. But we are looking for advice.

Your numbers do not make sense.

The CH is jumping all over the place with no obvious cause.

8 lb of calcium chloride should raise the CH by about 84 ppm.

Maybe the autofill is leaking and causing the pool to get diluted?
