Hello All - Starting a new IG pool build in Houston Texas. I've met with 5 builders, both big national and smaller local companies and started narrowing it down. I've attached some of the renderings and would like to get some advice and opinions as I move through the process. We are trying to keep the pool to a specific area in order to leave room for a yard on the side but I'm not sure if it's too small.

The waterline dimensions
26' x 14'
Depth 3.5' to 5.5' or a sport pool with deepest in the middle 3.5'-5.5'-4.5'
5'-6' Length Sunshelf, 9" deep, with 2 bubblers
Spa 7'x7', Raised, 6 Jets (Using the spill area from spa as a water feature)
Raised Wall 12" going to 6", no water feature in the wall
Cool Decking all around

Equipment is still TBD but the builder we are thinking using installs Pentair
Mentioned some Equipment: MasterTemp Heater 400K BTU, Intelliflow 3HP Pump

1. Sunshelf
a. What length should a sunshelf be to fit most pool loungers, would 5' be good are is 6' minimum recommended?

b. Any opinions on shelf depth, we are thinking 9" but not sure if 6" or a deeper 12" is recommended for using pool loungers.

2. Pool size
a. The main pool area would be 20'x14 when you take out the shelf. This seems to be on the small side when comparing to many pools on TFP. Anyone with a similar size have regrets no going bigger.

b. For the depth I originally wanted to do a sport pool with the middle being the deepest, 3.5'-5.5'-4.5', but a couple of the builders said the grade may be too steep/drastic and recommended either make the pool wider or put the deepest on the end.

3. Equipment
a. None of the builders like to use SWG and pretty much say the warranties will not be covered for the decking and plaster if we use salt. I'm really pushing for it so we'll see. What sort of costs increases should I be looking replacing the IC with SWG?

b. Does a different heater have to be used with a SWG?

c. Builder hasn't mentioned what the control center is. Does Pentair have multiple control centers or is Intellicenter the central piece and you have to add things like Intelliconnect to add automations. What do ya'll recommend for automations.

d. They are also including the Pentiar Prowler Cleaner. From what I've read on TFP it's recommended to not get a cleaner from the builder. Are their any specific cleaners that ya'll have used and recommend?

e. Any thoughts on autofill, builder wants to include?

f. I haven't had any discussions about lights. What number would be recommended for this side pool? Would you put a light on the shelf? Any recommendations for models to use if we want automation and color LED?

There are usually discussions about on new pool builds regarding returns and skimmers and drains. The builders primarily say 2 skimmers and 1 return, is this good?

What other big and small items should I be thinking about at this stage?

Thank you for your help and guidance.

3.5' is a bit too shallow. I'd recommend 4' for the shallow end(s). 5.5' is too deep for most people to stand. I'd suggest 5' for the "deep" part of your pool. I have a 4'-5'-4' depth profile for my pool and it works great. It's deep enough to swim and shallow enough to stand.

You need specific model numbers for all your equipment. The IntelliFlo3 is excellent. Get the 3.0 HP. If you're getting IntelliCenter, the 011075 is a good choice. I'd recommend a large cartridge filter (CCP520) and an IC40/IC60 SWCG. Get a bypass for your heater.

What length should a sunshelf be to fit most pool loungers, would 5' be good are is 6' minimum recommended?
Depends on the size of the loungers. I have Ledge Loungers and I'd suggest a 6' minimum ledge.

Any opinions on shelf depth, we are thinking 9" but not sure if 6" or a deeper 12" is recommended for using pool loungers.
Personal preference. 9" would be fine. I have 12" and like it.

That is a bit small. If your yard and budget can accommodate a larger pool, I'd go for it. Consider repositioning and reorienting the shelf and bench to create a swim lane on the long axis of the pool.

You definitely want a SWCG. All chlorinated pools have salt in them. Your PB is either misguided or misleading. What is "IC"? A SWCG adds a little to the price of your build (IC40 cell costs $1k) but it's negligible.

Does a different heater have to be used with a SWG?
No.

Builder hasn't mentioned what the control center is. Does Pentair have multiple control centers or is Intellicenter the central piece and you have to add things like Intelliconnect to add automations. What do ya'll recommend for automations.
Get IntelliCenter with the load center and built in SWCG transformer.

They are also including the Pentiar Prowler Cleaner. From what I've read on TFP it's recommended to not get a cleaner from the builder. Are their any specific cleaners that ya'll have used and recommend?
You can probably get the robot cheaper yourself. Call Marina Pool & Spa and they'll help you.

Any thoughts on autofill, builder wants to include?
You can get an autofill or have a fill line managed by your irrigation controller (I have this and really like it). You also want an overflow drain towards the top of your waterline tile, like this:

Overflow Drain.jpg
I haven't had any discussions about lights. What number would be recommended for this side pool? Would you put a light on the shelf? Any recommendations for models to use if we want automation and color LED?
One for the spa, 2-3 for the main part of your pool, one for the shelf. Make sure they all point away from the house or main seating area. MicroBrite is the latest model from Pentair, but their reliability is poor. You might have better results with Jandy.

The builders primarily say 2 skimmers and 1 return, is this good?
You definitely want 2 skimmers. Pool main drain is optional. I would think ~5 returns would be appropriate for your pool.

What other big and small items should I be thinking about at this stage?
Remember it's your pool, your money, and your decisions. Don't let your builder talk you into something you don't want. Think about future growth (extra empty conduit, landscape lighting, etc.). Strive for quality and simplicity whenever possible. Spend lots of time in the planning phase. It's impossible to have too much detail.

Take a look at my build thread (link in my signature). Read these two articles and as many build threads as you can.

Texas pool builders really hate swg's. I've heard so many tall tales from them about the horrors that are sure to unfold the moment salt touches a pool.

Any way you choose to chlorinate there will be salt in the pool. The amount of salt an swg requires is about 90% less than the salinity of ocean water and only slightly more salty than any other pool water.

The idea that a builder would void all warranties because of an swg probably means their warranties were worthless anyway. I wouldn't want work with someone like that.

PB is installing the Pentair Intelliconnect system. Is this a stand alone automation control system or does it connect to the Intellicenter? Will intelliconnect be ok for Pool, Spa, Heater, SWG, lights and bubblers?

Thanks

I have Hayward equipment, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

However, see this PDF from Pentair's website outlining the key differences. https://www.pentair.com/content/dam...als/training/Automation System Comparison.pdf

As you can see, the Intelliconnect is much less robust and may not even be appropriate for dual bodies of water (pool + spa). The Intellicenter is Pentair's flagship automation system and will be supported for many years to come.

If this were my pool, I would insist on a genuine Pentair Intellicenter with ic40 or ic60 SWG.
