Hi all,

We recently bought a house with an inground pool. We had the pool store open the pool, but would like to maintain it ourselves. I do not have a Taylor Test kit yet- but it's coming! So this was with a test strip

Approximate readings:

FC: 0
Alk:80
Ph: 7.2
TH: Like 800

No matter how much chlorine I throw in it, the reading has been staying pretty zero.

We've been putting sodium dichloro-s-triazinetrione in it- what the old owners left

The pool is crystal clear but there does appear to be scaling forming on the side of the vinyl right where the waterline is. The algae that was there a week and a half ago when we opened it is very dead.

Looking for some advice! Ty

Great decision to order a test kit. Which one are you getting?
While you are waiting on your test kit, add 5 ppm FC worth of liquid chlorine / plain bleach to your pool each evening with the pump running. This will replenish the FC lost each day to the sun and also inhibit any algae in the water from growing further.
What is the CH of your fill water?
I suggest you read through Pool Care Basics - Trouble Free Pool and even look at a few of our videos TFP-TV - Trouble Free Pool

CH of the fill water is about 450ish.
(I dunked a test strip into a glass of water yesterday because that did occur to me)

We'll pick up the liquid chlorine today

And the K2006- didn't bother with the larger kit because we opened our pool a little late

With a FC of 0 and recent algae, be prepared to do the SLAM Process. You will likely need more FAS-DPD reagents.

Need to get the CH down if that high number is correct. Or be very diligent at maintain low pH and TA.

I had a suspicion we'd end up going that route. We bought a bunch of liquid chlorine today and spent some time today cleaning the filters and vacuuming the remaining debris off the pool bottom.

We're under water restrictions here- so I'll probably have to go the second route once everything is sorted. I'll look into what needs to be done for that too

Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction! I got a little overwhelmed with all that I've been reading up on how to take care of inground pools
