So pool shops are like anti virus software, they make the viruses to keep you coming back.

It all makes sense now.

Hi,
I've inherited the family pool from my beloved and now deceased father. Im trying to handle it to ease mums burden at the moment. Problem is I have no idea what i'm doing.

I saw some great reports about this place on whirlpool.net.au and an app to input all the bloody measurements would really help. Versus my method of that chlorine testy thing sure looks not pinky today vs yesterday.

And then theres the algae, I treat it like family now. Cause its seemingly never leaving home. Everyone else says terrible things about it. But getting rid of it... well I was sure the sun would implode before that anyway.

Cheers boys!

The advantage of algae over family is that you can get rid of it with chlorine.

Welcome to TFP, I'm sure we can help you to get your pool sorted.

You should get a test kit from Clear Choice Labs, you're supporting local business there, they're based in Brisbane.

I suggest the compete kit for salt water pools:

Then do a complete run of tests and post the results here.

In the meantime, start reading through the articles that Newdude posted. Looks like you're up for a SLAM Process.

The V18 seems a bit undersized for a 50000L pool in Brisbane climate. But that's for later to tackle. Good thing is, you can just upgrade to a bigger cell - there is a hidden service menu where you can tell the control box about the cell size.

we are going to need some numbers to start with
looks like your original post has been edited
which chlorinator do you have and how many hours per day is it running
what does the water look like at the moment
what size is your pool and construction, concrete , fibreglass or vinyl liner
Weird I dont think I edited. But was me birthday yesterday so was a bit sloppy. I've done worse.

I put 50k litres down since I remembered someone saying that... That's the professional way of knowing ur pool size right ?!? ;)

I honestly don't know. In fact likely all my info needs revising so ignore it for now. I need go down to pool, find model numbers etc. I tried guessing last night and im surely off on specifics sorry. I see calculators for pool volume i'll get out the measuring tape and sort it.

Really looking forward to finally understanding this, cause I'm good at most stuff, but at pools...well the algae tells you!

that chlorine testy thing sure looks not pinky today
Just wanted to say "Hey" and that we're glad you found us. The fact that you figured out that TFP is the place to be, and the instincts you've already demonstrated, puts you in the 98th percentile. You're way closer to getting this down than you think. The testy thing not being pinky is pretty much all there is to it!! The rest is just filler!

Your dad would be proud of you for stepping up to help your mum.

Thanks mate.

Kits arrived, looks intimidating. Reading through the test book tonight. Turned up at sunset of course.

Do I just put all the info obtained in the app? Do I post it in this intro thread?

Im fine with that if appropriate.

Also took some pics of the gear so i'll input actual correct model numbers in sig.

I appreciate your patience.

Block off everything but one test. As a whole it looks like rocket science. But take one test and get the bottles together in order. You don't even need to know what they are for now.

Then take each line one at a time and 'fill vial to 10ml' and 'add scoop of powder' will make you 🤦‍♂️that it looked so intimidating.

Log them in the app so we can see them down the road if need be. (Buy the premium for $8/year and it will save all your logs, not just one).

Then post the results here for current help.

Welcome, you're in the right place. Also, I empathize, sorry for your loss. I too just recently lost my dad last month. My condolences to you and your family during this difficult time.

When you post your results, you can help us to help you, by posting them just like this, vertically, in this order, with these exact labels (just copy and paste and replace these example numbers, including a placeholder if you skipped any tests):

FC: 4.5
CC: not tested
ph: 7.8
TA: 60
CH: 350
CYA: 50

Here's a good page to read to learn some "TFP etiquette," if you want to be one of the cool kids:

As they said- just do one test at a time, record the results & then post em up here. Feel free to ask questions along the way.
*The cya test is best done in bright sunlight (back to the sun)
but many do it in the kitchen along with all the other tests if its bright enough in there.

Oh really? Hard to believe that line, when seen right next to your avatar. You'll need a new t-shirt:

This is Australia
We Eat Meat
We Drink Beer
And We Test Pools!

You got this. We all felt exactly the same way, until about the second or third time. Then it's "Oh, well that was easy."

Thanks mate. You too. He was my first 'close' family member to die. Like they say god takes the best early. Maybe why i'm trying to do everything for everyone atm. Cause that was dad.
