I live in south FL so we get a lot of sun and heat of course. I have had the SWG for a couple months and have a real hard time keeping the chlorine level balanced. I have yellow algae now and its spreading, the FC just wont go up or kill it. My CYA is 70 so I think I am good there. Question is, will a SLAM or big liquid chlorine shock help to eliminate? Any other thoughts? TYIA

Since you have mustard algae here’s some additional reading that you’ll want to follow when your SLAM is complete.

Ok. Should I turn off the swg while doing this?
Yes. You have to read through the somewhat long SLAM Process to familiarize yourself with all the details. It says
If you have a salt water chlorine generator, chlorine tablet dispenser, injection pump, or Liquidator, turn it off for the duration of the SLAM process. SLAM by adding liquid chlorine only for best results.

un,

What FC target were you shooting for?? I suspect it was way less than what we recommend and that is why you have algae.

See this chart... SWCG section with a CYA of 70. FC/CYA Levels

Once you get algae, the cell will never keep up.. You need to SLAM with Liquid Chlorine.

Thanks,

Jim R.
Yes I guess I was apparently. I was trying to keep it around 3, but it appears that it needs be between 5-10 for a swg with a cya of 60-70. I guess my other main problem is trying to determine how long to run it, at what percent, to maintain that level of 5+. I was running a heater to keep the water 80-85 degrees, so I am not sure how much that plays a part in maintaining the amount. Should I drain some after the slam and get the cya down some? These idiots I had come try and care for my pool for a few months dumped a ton of stablizer in before i had my SWG and CYA was well over a 100 for a bit

GREAT that you identified the reason for the algae. We can help fix that to prevent Freon occurring again. Follow the SLAM process as noted by others. Only use liquid chlorine to rise and hold at SLAM level.

Have you downloaded the
PoolMath app? It tracks your test data and immensely helpful during a SLAM. Furthermore, it has a section to help set your SWCG based on pump run time and FC level desired.

How are you testing? FC of 3 with a CYA of 70 is asking for problems.

Thank you for the feedback! Yes, I downloaded the app it said 4.25 gallons of liquid chlorine at 10%. I added just under five accidentally. It’s probably a tad high but I’m sure it will come down. I’m going to check it again in the morning I have the VSP running at 2000 RPMs nonstop, I will continue to keep track of it

You actually don’t want it to come down. 😉 if it comes down fast, that means algae is fighting with it. Check it 30 minutes after adding chlorine and add more if you came up short. If you overshot, it’s ok to just wait until it comes down to whatever SLAM level you were shooting for. A little extra isn’t a big deal, just wastes chlorine ($). Check and dose several times a day if you can to make the process go faster.

Use the 10ml sample size for the FAS/DPD test - each drop equals 0.5 FC.
One rounded scoop of the R-0870 powder.
That test is accurate up to around 50 ppm

5 gallons (640 oz) of 10% liquid chlorine will raise the FC by 33 in your 15,000 gallon pool.

What was the starting FC?
Try the test again and report back.

Well the FC is through the roof. I can’t even get a reading it’s so high some how!
Not possible. FAS-DPD can read up to 50ppm and you didn’t add nearly enough to get that high. You sure you didn’t use the yellow OTO test or paper strips?

Started at under 1. I put 100 drops and it kept getting almost red! Never went clear. Idk what’s the issue but I Stopped at 100. I’ll try again in the am and see where it’s at. Water isn’t overly cloudy. Ph is high of course

You did something wrong. What color did it turn when you added the powder? If it didn’t turn pink/red when you added the powder that means you have zero chlorine and there’s no reason to add any drops.
