Testing kits question - new pool fill

Hit the 30 day mark on 9/20 and its time to turn on SWG + add salt. 😃

The PB Chem guy was going to do it but I had to push it out to next week as we had some concrete pour going on both side yard access areas this week and no access for him.

Haven't heard back from him on the reschedule, and I am debating on just doing it myself. 🤔

It's the only way to get it right. The pool people rarely test the baseline and just dump in the max amount at once. Many have overshot the target.

You need 15 bags give or take and that's $120 at home depot. At this stage in the game, I'd rather it be done right than free.

Thanks all!

I forgot to mention they do have all the salt bags for me here in my yard. I'll be home later this afternoon but if I remember there is over 10, maybe 14 or so. I'll check back in when I return home and get this rolling!

So it's free ????????? Then it's a no brainer to not give them a chance to foul it up. (y)

Test before. Add 75 % of the difference and creep the rest of the way. Let it mix with the pump on for 2 days each time. Make sure the cell is off.

Yes sir. It was part of the equipment delivery awhile back that arrived on the pallet.

I think I will do the OCLT tonight then if I pass get started with the salt.

I need to read back but I could of sworn that I need to do a SLAM when starting up the SWG for first time? Or was it since I will be switching to SWG, need to bump up CYA a ton so will need to dump in a ton of liquid chlorine as well?

Make sure the cell is off.

I see on the equipment panel the SWG is on (I think?) but has no salt warning. Do I physically need to turn off the cell by flipping breaker so the SWG panel actually turns off?

My app does show SWG on "standby" mode and desired chlorine at 0% right now. Not sure if this means it's off? Screenshot_20230923_122241_iAquaLink.jpgScreenshot_20230923_122231_iAquaLink.jpg

O% is the same as off. (y)

Close but no hand grenade. Before raising the CYA considerably, you want to Overnight Chlorine Loss Test. Once you have proved no algae, then you can raise the CYA, which also raises the SLAM target.

Alright reporting my OCLT results:

8:30pm - 3.5 FC / 0 CC - Pool temp 71°
6:00am - 3.5 FC / 0 CC - Pool temp 68°

Should I move on to salt today? I just added my daily liquid chlorine, assume I need some CYA later on once SWG is up and running?

Honestly guys I am a little nervous to start up the SWG on my own but I know I can get thru it with TFP help...you've all be awesome no doubt.

Side note, it's pretty chilly out now, pool temp was 68° this morning, believe it is now Fall here in California. Should I even start up the SWG with colder weather approaching?

Can't wait until I can stop manually dosing Chlorine. I've gotten use to it now but it will be one less thing to have to do.

My 8 year old girl does want to have a big swim party coming up so I will be throwing in 10 bottles 10% liquid chlorine. 😆

OK not 10 but you guys get the point lol.
Also I don't know why but I am having some sort of "new pool 1st big bather load" anxiety going on! It's very weird...hence why I plan to drop a good amount of Liquid chlorine in to up FC before party.

Pass with flying colors !!!!

Raise the salt and CYA at your leisure. They can be done simultaneously. In hindsight with things cooling off, you might want to road test the current CYA before raising it any. It will make things easier for the off season with LC with less CYA. You can always raise it next week if the FC from the SWG doesn't hold well.

It's really no biggie. Add 5ppm over target and you'll be fine. Adjust after as necessary and you'll likely still be 3 over.

And about that 3.5 FC. Waaaaaay too low. I don't care *how* you're dosing. No Bueno.

Hmm let me see here. I have that TFP article bookmarked with the auto calculation chart, at 30 CYA right now for liquid gives me 3 FC min. I usually add 3/4 gallon liquid per day in morning which per my testing bumps it to 6-6.5 FC, so by end of the day I am sitting around 3.5-4 after burn off.

Does this seem about right/good?

Edit: sorry, per chart shows 2 minimum but I was trying to stay at above 3+ at the end of a sunny day after burn off. Is that ok?Screenshot_20230924_073838_Brave.jpg

Basically my thought process from what I've read in this thread and others, never let it get below minimum levels and give it a little cushion as well?

Calculate how much burn off my pool has during the day and add enough chlorine to it hits the target mark with a little cushion as well.

2.0 is my minimum, 3.0 is my cushion...I add enough liquid chlorine in early morning before I head to work to hit my cushion.

Is my thought process correct here? Thanks!

Ok so I have 12 bags of salt, 40lbs per bag.

Did the pool math effects of adding, this will raise salt by 2600.

They left a note on my panel salt needs to be 3.0-3.5. Does this equal out to 3,000-3,500?

I have 600 in now, plus 2,600, will give me approximately 3,200 which puts my in that 3,000-3,500 bracket yah?

Each 40 pound bag of salt will add 217ppm.
12 bags would be about 2600ppm
2600 + 600 = 3200

Verify the bags are 40 pounds each.
If so, add 9 bags in the shallow end, brush until dissolved, run pump 24/7, retest salt 24 hours or more later.
Add addition salt if needed to get to your goal salt level.

Any time you add more than a bag of salt, be sure the SWG is off and you mix the water with the pump for at least 24 hours bedore starting up the SWG.

Your thought process is dead on the money. (y) But it's too little cushion for my liking for myself, much less someone learning. Lol.
