bperry’s pool renovation

Work with your back/sweat or your wallet.....................I can't wait to see which one wins!
The wallet appears to have won the first round. It came with a free angle grinder. Or maybe the wallet lost?B2024A6F-B8A0-4972-BCEB-D9C6EB9E249C.jpeg

I had been using some online calculators to estimate the square footage of the plaster and realized that it might be more accurate to actually measure the square footage. So I measured out a series of 5ft squares with a red crayon (the construction kind, not crayola) which gave me 25ft2 each and came up with ~950ft2. The online calculators put me at 1450ft2 but those are using rectangles and averages. So I may order 1500ft2 worth of plaster if it goes that way. I’ve found a place that says they’ll drop ship me a plaster mixer/sprayer equipment for diamondbrite which I estimate will be more suitable to my lack of a plaster crew. I figure I could teach my son to spray and I could do the troweling, and I could get my wife and daughter to run the mixer.

That is all still plan B if a suitable plaster contractor can’t be found.

And we’ve started chipout. It’s hard work. Decided I could pay my son better than Chick-fil-A wages for taking turns chipping 25ft2 at a time and it’d be well worth the money.

Yikes! I would think that should easily be exchanged, but I've been wrong before. I can't see that you were using it in a manner that wasn't intended. I've torn up tile with those, but Bosch brand, not Milwaukee, and not ever had any issues like that.

They exchanged it no questions asked. So good news. I did discover a different method for chipping that’s goes faster and uses a different bit. The bit flat bit works better for skimming the last bit of plaster off of the gunite. A straight flat bit aiming straight down into the plaster works in that it fractures a larger portion of the plaster and makes it tend to break loose in larger chunks.

@Bperry what kind of plaster rig are you looking at using? Man please be careful - if it gets a pack in the hose the pump will easily generate enough pressure to blow the hoses apart violently - a local competitor blew a hose and it whipped and snapped his shin...then did it again about 6 months later to the same leg!

Let me know, I might be able to offer some tips on best practices to make it go smoothly. Diamond-Brite can be tricky to pump.

No idea how I missed this thread. I'm all for fixing things myself, but I don't have the cojones to even try what you're doing. I can't wait to see how this progresses.

I’m looking at renting one from Quikspray Inc, but doing it myself is still a backup plan. Even renting a pump, I’d need a few other somewhat experienced people helping that I don’t currently have. I’m somewhat hopeful I can find someone I can trust to do the plaster work at a minimum.

Would definately appreciate any advice you can offer!

Welp, the chipping is just about done, but there’s a pile of plaster chips in the shallow end that aren’t moving themselves. The challenge now is that the dumpster I rented is about 70 yards away in my driveway at a slight incline. I soaked 1 t-shirt getting the chips out and moved over to the dumpster. So I’ll be leaning on my wallet again to rent a small bucket loader and then have the family grab a bucket and scoop. The issue is the dumpster gets picked up next Wednesday and today is all thunderstorms and the weekend is all back to the heat wave. And just yesterday I pumped all the rainwater out and it’s got an another 12” dumped in today. All kinds of fun challenges this week!

Chipout was completed last week. My dumpster rental had a weight limit of 4 tons and I didn’t get any overcharge fees after they picked it up so I’m assuming it was less than that, but didn’t feel like much less. Carrying it all out by hand in buckets was hard. Piles of wet plaster chips seem to be like the holiday inn for mosquitos.

I did manage to find a plaster contractor who seems willing to do the job, though I haven’t got an official estimate from him (just got a verbal estimate). Depending on the tile upgrade cost, we have two options picked out.

I may even have the guy apply kooldeck to my deck if he gets back to me with an official bid. So for now I’m in a bit of a holding pattern waiting on someone else. That’s the hardest part for me, as I’m not very patient.
