Raised my CYA now have no FC

My CYA went low due to tons of rain causing my overflow to kick in. So I added stabilizer to raise it to 70 as measured by my Taylor kit. But now when I test my FC, it’s nearly unreadable. Maybe .5? The test result has next to no color.

After adding CYA, I didn’t change my SWG from 20% (where my FC has always held steady at 3) so increased it to 40% yesterday with no change.

Should I bump up my SWG even more? Reduce the CYA? I’m in central FL but the pool is on the north side of my house so it gets a good amount of shade.

Use liquid chlorine to raise the FC to target level for your CYA. The SWCG is for maintaining that.

Thanks! I’m using the Pool Math app to figure out how much I should add, but there’s no option for liquid chlorine. Any suggestions?

I have a jug of this stuff that someone suggested I keep on hand so I should be able to use it, right?

Use "Bleach" option and 12.5% if you are using the suncoast liquid Gold chlorine.

If your CYA is now 70ppm, then keep your chlorine way above 3ppm, closer to 8-9ppm would be better

Ed,

This time of year in Florida it's very common to consume well over 3 ppm per day of FC and that can drop to less than 2 ppm in winter. Please add some details on your pool with a signature. Here's how. You can easily figure out how much your swg setting need to change and get very, very close with tools available here. Whenever your FC gets off by much it's way better to goose it with liquid. Of course, once you get it stable and running at the proper FC and CYA level you almost never need to goose it at all.

Weird, I entered all that info before and I see it up in the header by my name?

That stuff loses potency over time so it may not give you the boost in FC you need but won’t harm anything. Chlorinating liquid isn’t something you can store long term.
Oof, you’re right. I just opened the bottle and it wasn’t very bleach-y smelling at all. I added a 1/2 gal so let’s see what that does.

Then the information is in your Profile.

The signature is a different area below your posts that is easier to see.

Wow that seems really high! Mine has held pretty steady at 3ppm until having to add stabilizer. It was even holding there when my stabilizer was near 0.
It’s not. Once you add CYA, you need to raise the chlorine level to stay sanitary. You may have algae brewing if your filter is starting to clog fast.

Check out the chlorine chart in this link for where it needs to be at all times and why.

Chlorine NEVER holds. It is constantly being consumed at some rate, sometimes not much, sometimes a lot but it is constantly being depleted
Ok. Point being that it’s always been consistent when I measure. Maybe the chlorine was being replaced by the SWG. But now that I increased the CYA, my chlorine dropped to 0, which concerns me that my SWG is malfunctioning. My SWG has always been able to increase from 0 - from the initial fill after the pool was built to the refill we did after the acid wash. Both times, the builder told us to let the SWG do its thing and it came back up to 2-3 within a couple of days.

Hopefully it holds steady now that I poured some liquid in to boost. And hopefully my SWG is working properly.

You can check for the presence of chlorine to see if your SWG is working. Assuming you haven't manually added any FC, hold a cylinder from your kit up against the flow into the pool and put in a few drops of R-0600 (It should be quite chlorinated)

I would suspect an algae bloom is consuming your FC rather than a faulty SWG but you never know.

Waiting on the swcg to increase fc from zero is a recipe for algae- the swg simply takes too long to increase fc & things proliferate in the meantime.

No need for hope- lets get proof.
#1 Do an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test at target fc levels w/ the swg off to rule out that something is brewing.
* If you pass you can then do an overnight chlorine gain test with the swg on.
* If you fail it’s SLAM Process time.

Put your swcg make & model (& other equipment details) in your signature & we can help you with runtimes & outputs
