Some advice about a replacement pump

My 5 year old Hayward 1.5 HP Super Pump is starting to make noise this summer (a low pitched ring) and I am starting to think about getting a replacement. Maybe its not going to die yet, but i need to start looking for replacements.

Is a variable pump a 'no-brainer' choice?

I have a Pentair IC 60 salt cell that I tweak with the Pentair IntelliConnect.
I went through past posts on the forum and came across a recommendation for this:

I am interested in not having to change the housing (so i don't have to modify piping.

I guess i would need to buy a Pentair variable pump/housing to get automation on the Intelliconnect.

My questions:
1. Variable is the way to go? I have a 4 month pool season (NY state).
2. is remote/internet automation important and worth it for a variable pump (this model will be able to be turned off and on with what i have, just not adjusted)?
3. Opinion on that pump? Other suggestions?

Thank you
John

Not only a no brainer but it is a now a government regulation that all filter pumps be VS when installed in new system or a replacement pump for existing systems.

This is personal preference. You don’t change your pump schedules much, so if you have a VS pump that allows you to set 2-4 schedules then you can set and let it run. You will just need to sync your Intelliconnect which controls your SWCG with the pump schedule to ensure the SWCG is only on when the pump is on. Do not rely on the flow switch as your primary control for the SWCG.

Also, your VS pump should be connected to constant power. So ensure it is connected to the LINE side of if you use circuit breakers in the automation. You want the schedule you set on the pump to turn it on and off. You do not want the automation system to switch it off.
This is the biggest change Managment that people need to understand when moving from a single speed to a VS pump

If you are not going to use automation, that is an excellent motor. As they are no longer made, don't wait too long if you are going to purchase one.
Of the many I installed I have had zero call backs. It can be used with your existing time clock to start the internal timers/speeds. It is one of the very few VSP motors that can have the power switched on and off. The video linked is directly from the manufacturer and tells how to do it. You will need a Hayward Super Pump GO KIT 3, only about $15.00 on Amazon.

Thank you for your response. I have a couple of questions.
1. The idea that I am buying a pump that is no longer made doesn't sound great to me. Its old tech now? I believe that you can program a schedule for the pump, but when you say 'not going to use automation' you mean not use the intelliconnect?
2. Century (A.O. Smith) 1.65 HP Motor, V-Green, Round Flange 56J, Variable Speed, 208-230V - Model ECM16CU - INYOPools.com Is this the kit?

thanks

Not necessarily "old tech," just superseded. I prefer them to the new models, but can no longer get them through my suppliers. It is a very robust motor that will give years of service and more control than the newer Century replacement motors.
That's definitely the replacement motor that you would be using for your Super Pump along with the GO KIT 3. InyoPools has it listed below the motor description.
Your signature doesn't mention an Intelliconnect. However, since it can control a single-speed pump it can control that motor. Just use the principles in the Regal Beloit/Century YouTube video and substitute what they instruct about an Intermatic for the Intelliconnect.

Most ones with automation want full control over a VSP, seeing and setting times and speeds, from the deviceor an app. That won't happen with your system and this motor as there will be no direct communication with the Intelliconnect, it will be an on/off switch. If you want that, you will need to get a new Pentair VSP for 2-3X the cost plus replumbing. Is it worth it? That's the decision you have to make.
