Started pump, just whirred...means shaft is rusted. Disassembled, broke free, put back together. Now when I start it the breaker trips.

Any thoughts?

The breaker GFCI?

Put a clamp on ammeter on the wires and see what the current draw is at start.

Post pics of the breaker.

Here is before and after. No problems for years. Maybe the breaker is bad?

More likely a bad pump then a bad breaker.

With a rusted motor it is likely a GFCI trip due to corrosion in the motor.

With the rusting you described it is probably done.

Replace the motor.

I found some pictures online and it led me to believe I might reassembled it incorrectly. I went to take it apart and I noticed one of the tensioner springs had come off. I reassembled everything and it is running like a champ.

Does anyone know how long the pumps are supposed to last and what we can do (if anything) to prolong it?

2 to 20 years.

Fix any internal leaks early. Don't ever let it run dry.
