Having a pool built and need advice

Forum search doesn't appear to work for "This thread". I wanted to search previous advice provided about CYA levels in this thread but when I search, it takes me to site-wide search results. Is there a better way to search a single thread?

Just use the previous button on the page counter at the bottom of this thread. We've only been doing chemistry for the last few pages.

Or click the the gear icon after clicking the search field. Then click advanced, search your terms, add relevant member if so desired, and sort 'by date' at the bottom before hitting search.

Ok I searched back a bit on CYA and I didn't ask this. CYA right now seems too low to me. I just measured a CYA of 50 this morning. Seems to bounce between 50 and 60, but that's probably my subjective result based on the visual test.

A further reading page on CYA I read states ideal CYA ppm for SWG is 70-80. The app's "ideal" range reflects this as well. Since I'm at 50-60 right now and using chlorine tabs, I shouldn't need to adjust it just yet, right? But when they dump the salt in the pool, I imagine at that point I'll want to raise it.

So the first question is: What kind of dry stabilizer should I get, and from where? That same page talks about at least 4 kinds of stabilizer but I'm not sure which to get, why, and what brand names I might see. I just want this to be easy!

Second question is, once I have that on hand and ready to use, when would be a good time to raise the CYA level using the app's recommended quantity?

I would not worry about CYA at all until your salt is added. Then you can bump it. Just adjust chlorine level based on your current CYA.

The below is what I get.

Also here is a great video I found on adding CYA to your pool. ;):p:ROFLMAO:

I crank up the pump and hop in the pool with mine once it's good and soaked. I hold it in front of the return and the jet does 95% of the work for me. Just make sure it's sealed/knotted well. (y)

Also,

***write this down somewhere***
(Maybe in sharpie on the CYA bag.)

Always Overnight Chlorine Loss Test before raising the CYA level considerably. Slam FC is 40% of the CYA level and you would SO much rather SLAM with a target of 12 FC than 28 FC. (The difference between 30 CYA and typical SWG level of 70 CYA).

Are you saying you'd rather SLAM *before* adding CYA?
Yes. Which is why you OCLT to prove you don't need to SLAM. Slamming at a higher target FC will blow through more chlorine.

FC burns off as a %, so a higher FC level burns off faster. For example, let's just say the loss is 25%. 25% is a loss of 3 at 12 FC and a loss of 7 at 28 FC, plus whatever the algae consumed. At $6 a gallon, it gets spendy quick, and you'll be lugging alot more jugs.

Are your 2 feature pumps running right now? They must be one of those aux buttons.
I found out it was these 2. Why there's a valve for each one is a bit confusing but oh well:

Now the question is: What is that smaller feature pump for? :ROFLMAO:

EDIT: Do you think it would be a good idea to make the tanning ledge bubblers/fountains have automatic valves so I can control them from the app? or are they something that runs any time the main filter pump is on?

EDIT 2: Ok the smaller pump is for the cleaner. That's what I originally thought but you had me thinking it might be for something else.

Does cyanuric acid have a shelf life? My understanding from reading about CYA is that you don't naturally lose it over time unless there's a leak or other kind of water loss. And I think pool math suggested I only add a few pounds of it. If I get 25lbs, will that be way too much? I don't really have a good feel for how often I'd use that each year.

You need the initial amount to get to 70 which is probably 10lbs and then maintenance. It does degrade. I lose 10ppm per month on average in season. I keep my water very warm though over 90. 25lbs is not too much. I have gone through 3 of those boxes in 5 years along with a couple 5lb bags. I winterize though and water level is lowered so I do lose some each season to that. I think it has a very long shelf life when stored properly. Mine is stored indoors.

CYA degrades. Especially at higher water temperature.
I read that page yesterday. Frustratingly, I seem to have overlooked this line:

> Chlorine breakdown in sunlight causes CYA degradation by hydroxyl radicals. This can cause a loss from 2 ppm per month to 10 ppm per month depending on the amount of sunlight the pool is exposed to.

Thanks for pointing it out!

Well I was looking on amazon and I saw 25lbs of CYA for about the same price as the one on ebay: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NF17TF3

However reviews have me skeptical. A lot of people state it has a ton of filler. Honestly this is a huge problem with Amazon for too many things; you just never know if you're getting a legitimate product or not. I guess I should stick with ebay or hardware stores :-(

Should the tanning ledge fountains/bubblers be running when the filter pump is? There's manual valves for them right now, which makes them a pain to turn on and off. But not sure if they are supposed to be turned off.

They should be off when you are not using the pool. They will raise pH. I suggest you get a JVA I think you have the capacity for another one. Check with your pool school today. Don't be surprised if they don't know most builders know how to install Aqualink but have no clue how it works.

I get Puri-Tech brand from Amazon. It's more name-brand-y than the generic box of white granuals. It's probably no better but that's what I tell myself to sleep better about it. Lalalalalalalalalalalala. :ROFLMAO:
