Hi, the top part of my pump basket has turned an orangey rust color (see attached pic #1). Does anyone know what may have caused this?

I also have a small slit in the basket (see attached pic #2). Could this be causing problems?

Background Info: I’ve been having suction problems in the skimmer line for months now. Previously resolved problem using a drain bladder but current clog has lasted over a month -tried all the usual stuff & nothing has worked. I finally learned to stop vacuuming the way I had been & I got a leaf vacuum (pool is under lots of trees) but clog issue not resolved yet. I have a sewer Jetter thing for the power washer coming - it should’ve been here yesterday but it’s not here yet.

And I’m a total newbie to all this - still trying to learn.

Brown is most likely iron. Slit in basket means it hadn't been cleaned regularly, or even a one-time event, and could indicate a clogged impeller with the debris that got through. Check that before trying to jet the suction line. Its best to avoid power tools on pool equipment if at all possible, especially the kind of pressure a power washer can generate.
Clogged impeller will act just like a clogged line. You can try to use a piece of wire with a small hook on the end to reach through the pump pot and try to clear the impeller eye. Debris can also get caught between the two "plates" of the impeller, in the vanes. Six bolts will loosen the sealplate from the pump body and give access to the impeller after the diffuser is removed.

Now that I think about it - I noticed a few spots this same color on the pool liner itself too. I’m guessing the high iron is from our water here and not something I can change before it goes in pool right? Are the liner stains something that’s fixable? Any way to prevent them?

The impeller thing - I’m still a little confused about. I’ve taken a wire and stuck it back there and I was able to easily turn it. But if I’m reading your response correctly - that doesn’t necessarily mean that there isn’t a clog because it could be behind the impeller - is that right?

Maybe pertinent info:

1. the pump has been way louder than ever before - our neighbor even came by to complain about it. I’ve been turning it off for days at a time until the suction issue can be fixed to see if that helps. It usually stays on 24/7.

2. Filter pressure has been elevated - almost 20 psi when before it was around 5.

3. This one is so embarrassing to admit but I don’t know what details are important so I’m just telling them all. Using the drain bladder so much makes the pool water level rise to almost overflowing. Yesterday I turned the pump on and set the filter to waste to drain some water out. It was coming out really slow so I left it for a few hours. I went to check it and the water line was all the way down under the return jets and the liner was bulging out in one place. Yeah I messed up bad - God I hope that doesn’t mean the liner has to be replaced now.

4. I remember before the suction quit working I vacuumed up a ton of leaves, acorns, pine needles, etc. at bottom of pool and I never saw much of anything come out in the pump basket - that’s why I was thinking it all must be clogged in the pipe before the pump. I already had snapped two different poles in half trying to pick up debris with the leaf rake thing previously. So that’s why I was trying to vacuum the stuff up even though I feared it might clog up the pipes. And I had been able to clear previous clogs relatively easily with the drain bladder. Since then - I bought a leaf vacuum and the ProTuff pole to hopefully avoid this happening again in the future.

5. When I turn the Jandy valve so water is just coming from skimmer to pump - water flow in pump basket isn’t right - it only comes about halfway up and then seems to stop. I have an older vid from last clog - let me try to find it.

Typing this all out combined with the disastrous liner bulge incident from last night is making me think that maybe I better stop this before I do some serious damage if I haven’t already. I don’t want to give up yet but do you think I’m in way over my head?

Someone on here once told me that the pool was an inanimate thing that would bend to my will eventually and I always replay that over & over again in my head - especially when I get really frustrated and want to give up and just cover the thing up and throw away all the hard work I’ve done over the past nine months. I’m trying to use the pool to get in shape - it’s so much easier on my joints, arthritis, getting old, etc. But it seems like it’s just one huge problem after another and I’m probably the cause of at least half of them

- Edited to add vid:
Does that work? Ignore the title :I

A clogged impeller will turn as easily as one that isn't in most cases. You sucked up a bunch of debris either with a broken basket or it was the result of all that debris. Here is a picture of a WhisperFlow impeller. You can see where a clog can end up besides the "eye." Best to dismantle the pump and check it. A piece of wire can clear the vanes.
