Temporary air relief plug

Clean and Clear Cartridge, biggest you can get. That is personal advice from all the reading that I've done and all the guides/expert advice I've seen. That being said, NOT all guides/experts here agree with that advice, nor would it be each of their advice. DE, Cartridge, Sand, all can work well. All depends on what you want it to do and what you want to deal with.

Best two places to read for more insight I can find for you on short notice...their may be more:
What size filter do you recommend for DE and for Cartridge? I have a 20 ft x 40 ft, 37.5k gal.

Get the biggest cartridge you can afford. Oversize your filter.

Pentair CCP-520 You have a big pool.

Thanks for the tips. I read the thread…but I don’t know that the overwhelming majority is aligned to cartridge filters. Why is it really better than a DE filter? Here is what I gathered:

1. Get an oversized filter no matter what type. And use hair nets in skimmers.
2. Seems like DE produces the clearest water and best filtration. But can be a bit messy to store, and handle when recharging after backwash, and some risks with over-charging and inhalation. Needs grids cleaned 2x per year.
3. Cartridge filters less of the finer debris. No backwashing involved. Needs to be cleaned 2x per year and the process can take 2-4 hrs.

I def like the clarity and cleanliness of my water with my current DE filter. Would there be any noticeable difference (less clean/clear) with a cartridge?

Also, what multi-port valve is recommended?

I just changed from DE to cartridge and I’m glad I made that switch. Cartridge is soooo much easier. I never, ever wanted to have to deep clean that DE filter again. As far as filtering, my water is just as clear and sparkling as it was before the switch.

I've had both now to compare. I'd not go back to DE again for myself. I dreaded washing down those grids and rinsing that mucky gunk from the housing, and back-washing always seemed a temp solution to the deeper cleaning of whole filter media and housing.

What happens if a leaf gets sucked into the skimmer line while The skimmer basket was removed and the system is on recirculate?

Do I still need a multi-port valve with a cartridge filter?

Gotcha. Can I still have one installed if I want to? Having the recirculate option when the filter was out of commission was very convenient

You would accomplish a filter bypass and a drain down option with appropriate diverter valves.

Before you go that route, do you have a test kit? Can you tell us which one? What is your current CYA level?

Depending on the answer, I would recommend liquid chlorine for now. How have you been chlorinating until now?
See attached pic for test results using TF pro. Based on this, I don’t see any issue with CYA so thinking of getting that was recommended and putting the CH tablets in there instead of in skimmers. Let me know your thoughts…4FD5DFC0-7861-41C6-BC88-4F8033A64FCF.png

You need to get chlorine in this pool post haste. Your TARGET is 6-8. Your minimum is 4. My guess is that you either have or will get ALGAE. Always follow this chart -->FC/CYA Levels

Add enough liquid chlorine to get to 8ppm now.
