Is it time to go with a SWG?

I use plain water softener salt. At my Home Depot it is blue bag Mortons or Diamond Crystals.

Be sure to test your pool water salinity before adding salt. And only add 2/3rds of the salt you need to start, let it circulate for a day and test. Add the balance to get to the ppm needed by your SWCG.

I use this salt.. Diamond Crystal Splash Ready 40 lb. Pool Salt 110002702

It costs a little more, but it dissolves faster.

The main key here is never, ever, use Clorox brand salt. It has iron in it and will stain your pool.

The RJ60 was delivered today and so was the salt test kit. According to the kit I have 8000ppm of salt in my pool!!! Is that possible? Do I just install the SWG and start making chlorine? I clearly don’t need to add any salt at this time.

Can you taste the salt?

You might want to retest. Follow the test directions very closely.

Yes, I can taste it. I had to use 40 drops to get it to turn pink.

Are you stirring by hand or do you have a Smart-Stir or similar deice?

As the drops go in you will see the copper color "flash" and then return to milky. The very first time it changes color and stays that way you need to stop.. Unlike some other tests you don't keep adding drops until the color no longer changes shades.

Yes, I can taste it.

That normally means it is at or above 3000 ppm. But as Jim says, 8000 is pretty high.

I’ll try again, but I think I did it right. The first drop colors the water yellow. From there it never hinted at pink until the 40th drop. Yes, I have a speed stir.

I think I had it filled to 25ml and not 10ml. Let me check

We saw this once before and this was the culprit that time

If the K-1766 sample is staying milky and not turning maroon when expected check you are using a 10ml sample and not 25ml.

Are you inverting the dropper perfectly and letting the droplet fall off the tip...

Yep, I’m stupid. Testing 10ml of water I come out to 3400ppm. Perfect!

No you most certainly are not. There is some weird phenomenon that happens when the brain reads *fill 25 ml vial* and the brain shuts off and misses the *to 10 ml* part.

Ask me how I know.
