Can’t get any free chlorine reading

Help! I put in 100 drops of the 0871 and it is not going back to clear it is still slightly cloudy. Is this normal?!
OK here’s my numbers.
Cl 0.5
Br 1
Ph 7.5
Ca hardness 750 ppm
TA 260

chlorine drop test did not turn pink after I did it again. The CYA test I filled all the way to the tube and I could still see the black dot so I don’t know what that means.
Advice??

Ok. Forget Br. That’s not for you, it’s just stamped on the block.

You have next to no chlorine, which you knew.

Filling the CYA tube to the top means you have no CYA, or less than 20 which is really unreadable.

Get 5ppm of bleach in there and test again to verify. Then go to 8 as the sun goes down so you can do an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test and test again first thing in the morning to see if you still have the 8 FC, or algae is eating it.

OK, I will put the bleach in there now how long until I retest?

20 mins with the pump running. You know what ? Just go to 10 now and test once it gets dark. You’ll have 9+ and just use that # for the OCLT.

OK I just put 10 ppm in now, I will test again in about 3 hours when it gets dark. Then I just use the number that I get and plug it into the OCLT test?

Yup. Whatever you have at dark, Even close to dark, should be there in the AM if the water is healthy.

You are the test. The test is ‘overnight’. It’s not part of the kit. Test the FC as the sun goes down. With no algae the FC will be the same in the morning. If the FC drops more than 1, Then we SLAM to kill the algae.

*also do the CC test in the morning immediately following the FC test. Have the bottles out and ready and it makes it easier to pick up the next one already uncapped.

Drop test. The box isn’t accurate enough for this. You need a specific #.

If you find the test instructions boring / hard to read or are simply overwhelmed by it all, and everything that got you here, I wrote this thread *exactly* for you. We were all there once, Overwhelmed, fustrated, and it seemed so hard. Take a breath, have a beverage and read this. 👇

Thank you, no should the water turn pink immediately when I put the powder in?
Ps nice note you wrote though. I actually did well in chemistry but I contaminated both my unknowns so there’s that

If there is chlorine, and you added enough powder, Yes. If it stays clear there is no chlorine.

A great way to know you added enough is if one or two grains don’t mix. Anything over what you need spins around. If you have just a little spinning around, It’s perfect. Keep scooping like that.

Well it doesn’t stay clear, it becomes cloudy because of the addition of the powder, but it doesn’t turn pink. So that’s no chlorine right?

I just checked it:
FC 2
CC 0.5
TC 2.5

I will check at 6 AM when I get up and put that in. Should I do anything additional tonight?
