Velcro??, admittedly very handy, how'd that one pop into your mind (any royalties involved?)

Just to name a few that have not made the list so far:
1. Smart phones ( I no longer have to load up with address books, calendars, and a palm pilot to keep my ADHD brain organized)
2. Duct tape (Where skill leaves off, duct tape takes over)
3. Coca-cola (For the caffeine, because I can't stand coffee)
4. Laproscopic surgery (No visible scars on my knee 6 years out, faint scars on my abdomen 1 year out)
5. No-spill spouts on sippy cups (If you had toddlers prior to 1990 I don't know how you managed.)

Fun fact: Beer is largely considered as the reason for for cities and congregation. Anytime people settled in large groups the water became tainted from the sewage. (Or lack thereof). But the beer making process sterilized the water allowing cities and civilization as we know it to progress.

I believe HJS said it best.

That's where my plumbing inspector must be, 7-9am my arse. Holding up progress!! Never was late, ever to an appointment or to work. If you are not early you're late. These public servant jobs have no idea. Then they are always crabby. These people are pencils down the second the clock hits their end time if not earlier. As Major Winters said, I joined the airborne to be with the best, not some draftee. The inspector people, draftees, slackers one and all!! Ok rant done, I'm calm now!!

1. Aviation and space travel - so much technology as been born from these
2. Medicine & Vaccines in general (especially for small pox, polio, and penicillin for the masses)
3. Communication systems - the telephone & radio allowed the world to exchange ideas and information
4. Electricity - much of anything we have today would not be feasible without it
5. Submarine - to live underwater for weeks at a time in a pressurized container

Manhole covers (round...the square ones didn't fit
Another fun fact. Circles are the only shape that cannot fall into themselves. Hence why all manholes are round. 50% for the guy on top and 50% in case anybody is already below.

I will argue that electricity, like fire, was not an invention and has always been elemental in nature. Electricity, fire, all the chemical elements in the periodic table, atoms, electrons, etc are not inventions.

Discoveries are gaining an understanding of the natural elements of our universe.

Inventions are how we apply human ingenuity to using those elements.
