Trying to cool down my pool

Hi all,

Just moved into a house with a dark bottomed pool. The water is starting to get to hot to be refreshing (91* today).

I bought a return fitting fountain on Amazon but it looks like my return fittings are not removable or at least not easily.

I was thinking about trying an external pump and hooking it up to a fountain of sorts would this be a waste of time?

Any other tips? Here's a picture of the jet in the wall of the pool. The pool does have a water fall but I don't see a difference even running that over night. I'm guessing because it's to much of a laminar flow vs a fountain style

I know the pool looks dirty in the pictures but we had a wind storm and I had just turned on the waterfall

Lots of different fountains on the forum. Using a sump pump would work fine with a fountain on the outlet.

Do remember forcing aeration will raise your pH. Evaporation will increase your use of fill water. Unless you use softened water for fill water, the CH level will go up quicker.

In order to get evaporative cooling you need to shoot water high in the air, so it comes down as droplets. What size is the return opening? You may have to combine a couple of fittings to attach the fountain. Since your return opening has a male threaded connection, you need a female fitting to screw onto those threads. The opposit end of the fitting probably also needs a female threaded connection so you can attach the fountain, but that may be difficult to find. If you get an adapter with a threaded female end and a slip male end, you can glue another adapter with a female threaded end and a female slip end. Then you can screw the fountain into the new adapter.

Yeah that was my plan initially. Unfortunately the threads you are seeing are just for the Eyeball and are not a normal PVC thread size. And i have no idea where to get an adapter for this size. It is not 1.5" nor is it 2" lol.

Im afraid the fittings are glued into the wall because i cannot get them to move with a strap wrench. I have not used a normal set of pliers because i am afraid they are glued and i dont want to either break the pipe or mess up the threads.

All the ones i saw that "glue in" do not have the little keyway for the removal tool. And these ones do not have the keyway either.

I have a transfer pump that is 1/2 hp. I rigged up a quick connection yesterday to the fountain and it sure had no problem shooting the water into the air. I think i am going to go buy some PVC pieces and actually give this a shot today.

I have this fountain Amazon.com: Nepta Blossoming Water Fountain: Garden & Outdoor and it comes with lots of adaptors to fit most pool returns.

Heres what i ended up coming up with, it actually came out way cooler than i expected and if it does cool the pool down i plan to make it more of a "finished" installation. Ill hide the piping a bit and make it look better.

Thanks, The only question i have - and time will tell is if it will Actually lower the water temperature.

And should i only run it at night when my goal is to lower the temp? Would running it in the day cause it to heat the water up? Its over 100 here today

When my pool temp reaches the 90's, I run mine overnight and can cool the pool down 6-8 degrees. I shoot the water about 20-25' in the air so it has lots of evaporative cooling. If I run mine in the day, it is primarily to have cooler water rain down on me.

You'll get more actual cooling if you run it at night. When you run it during the day it feels really good to just sit under it! I have had days when the pool felt like bathwater but the fountain was nice and cool. I liked to hang out under the arch of the spray.
