It shouldn't really matter, I guess you would end up with some cuts on the edges, and maybe that is a valid reason to do it the way they did, the edges may be too sharp if you had to cut some, here is a quick sketch of what I was thinking... (Blue pieces from sheet 1, green pieces from sheet 2, cuts would be where the green ones are going over the edge... keep in mind, this is rough). Even if you had to cut the pieces on the ends, the tile guy can take them off of the sheet, and flip them around 180 degrees so that the cut side is facing into the mosaic and wouldn't create a sharp edge. If your spa ledge measures to a whole inch dimension, the only cuts should be the ends of every other green piece at the bottom of this, the others should line up on the edge of the spa. Again, I saw some like yours in a google search, so this may very well be the way it is done as a standard. I just know that my tile guy took a lot of care in making sure that he didn't have to minimize the cuts on my tile.

Thanks for the examples @OrlandoBull . Think thats what the tried to do but when they had to the cut the tiles less than in half/the corner of the 1x1 tiles, they didn't cut even. I am thinking if they just just cut a row of tiles in half evenly then they could mesh them together better.

Just to be clear, my 45 degree angle line is for reference, the only cuts I would make are to the green pieces hanging off of the bottom of the sketch. Those would be straight cuts making the 1x1 tiles 1x0.5. No 45s and small corners to deal with.

That's much better. Will likely be hardly noticeable once grouted. Your eye is not drawn to anything like it was with the cut line right there. That second photo, I wouldn't even know what I was looking for if I hadn't read the beginning of the thread.

They just redid the corners, im sure if they had done it like that at first, it would have come out better.

When I first brought it up I got: "That's how we always do it"!
 
Awesome, looks much better, glad they redid it without too much of a fight. I don't think there is anything such as "perfect" in the construction industry in Florida these days. We did a major house reno before moving in and it was a constant battle and having to stay on top of the contractors to get things done as close to right as possible. My tile isn't "perfect", but I am happy with the guy I had. He also engaged me with my width issue and we worked out the solution together. Some grout lines aren't perfect, but in the end, it's a huge step up from my previous pool. I actually like how they did the cut tiles here, probably even less noticeable than having the cut pieces on the ends.

Thanks again for your help. I did ask them to put the cuts inside the pattern where possible hoping it would make it less noticable.
I get what your saying about Florida construction, took 2 years to build the house. If we didn't live 15 mins away and not able to stop by daily I'm afraid to think how it would have turned out.

Yeah I am not sure what we are going to do about the spa tile, it's a different sheet size from the other one so we can't just replace it easily.
