Freezing weather

On this topic. . .

New pool build, about a week past completion. We're in the brushing twice a day. . . . And hubby says he's doing it in stages. The metal pole is freezing cold. Any tips on brushing in freezing weather? Is there something like a koozie or a sock? (We're also in this frozen blast coming down past Dallas and into South Texas )

You gottah love the LOVE this forum has!
You guys jumped on this ASAP to help us, which are not use to having this type of weather
I didn’t help here, others already had it covered, but I wholeheartedly AGREE with the love about the love. Well done all !!!

We usually call them *gloves*, but socks or any equivalent will do the job just the same. So sorry y’all are getting a lightning fast education about the cold.

Right now, everything is covered and running fine. I’m ready to drain and cover everything if I need to do so.

If you have power, water is running through your pipes. Moving water won't freeze. This from my Idaho farm boy husband that had to drain our pipes during our January 11th snow storm. . . . When nothing was hooked up. Just the pressure test done, so water was in them. Our pool manager said in all his years he's never had a pool owner do that.

Meanwhile he's out there covering our plants with this huge tarp.

Is it best to run the pool pump at a certain speed during all of this?
I bet you cold weather peeps are laughing your heads off )

Running water through a pipe will indeed freeze, but it takes a pretty good understanding of some advanced math and thermodynamics that I don't understand nor care to figure out. :) I do know that for the *most* part, in the continental US, if there is water running through the PVC pipes at a decent rate, it won't freeze. As far as what that rate is, again...I don't know since it takes math to figure it out. I have a two speed and I am running it on high...if I had a VSP, I would run it pretty fast as well...better safe than sorry, IMHO.

Hubby is wearing gloves when brushing the pool. A lot of it is the water temp affects the metal pole. I thought there was some handy thing to buy that velcros onto the pole or something. Temp is 31 degrees, wind 13mph and 86% humidity. Monday temps get down to 7 degrees. We had a light freeze last night.

Still not really understanding what you are looking for? Can you just bring the pole into a garage or something between brushings?

Freezing cold pole when brushing a new pool for 20 minutes. . . Hubby has Egpa, a rare disease, and his hands don't have the fine motor skills like he used to. So he takes longer to brush the pool on a normal day. He did bring the pole inside but it doesn't take long for it to start freezing again. He is wearing leather gloves -- The cold still affects him.

Thanks all )
Good thing hubby is brushing. I'll go take my turn but I know I won't last long out there. My hands are habitually cold. Do they make these pool poles out of something else besides metal?

NEVER !! Wouldn’t wish this worry on anyone. We only laugh at good natured ribbing things. Like when your Mother in law is coming to visit. That’s hysterical and good luck with THAT :laughblue:

What a great idea on those hand warmers. The pole's sitting near me right here (inside) and I touched it and it's still cold. Does the thing ever warm up?

Mother-in-laws. Yes. Mine wasn't around long, she passed many many years ago. . . But I still remember how protective/domineering she was with her youngest and only son. UGH! No one was good enough for her only son!

No. Metal feels colder even when it’s the same temperature as everything around it. You can redneck it with duct tape and it will feel less cold.

But I have a fun idea for the Hubs. Create a slight breach of etiquette by skipping the triple dare and going right for the throat. The triple DOG dare........

I can tell you RIGHT NOW...this can and WILL happen. Last winter, we had some friends over for the weekend and one of them got the smart idea to lick our flag pole while it was about 25 degrees out...and YES his tongue got stuck. :)

Another question. What do I do once temps go back to normal? Make sure drain plugs are nice and tight, and then just turn on the pump? Air gets flushed out? Some other process?

Thanks.

Yes. Open the valves too if any were closed. fill the pump basket with water to help it prime and not blow up if it takes a minute.
